Okorocha says no reason to stop free education in Imo

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Wednesday said the state governor-elect, Emeka Ihedioha, has no reason not to continue with his government’s free education programme in the state.

Okorocha said this while addressing journalists at the Government House in Owerri, the state capital.

He assured all stakeholders that there would be hitch-free transition of power in the state on May 2019.

The governor said his administration established six new universities, four polytechnics and two colleges of education within the last eight years.


Okorocha, who inaugurated a committee tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the take off of the institutions, said “education remains the biggest industry in Imo State.”

He said he was not setting traps for the incoming government with the establishment of the institutions.

“I am not setting any trap for the incoming administration, neither do I want the incoming government to fail with the setting up of these universities, polytechnics and colleges of education,” he said.

On whether the state has the financial capacity to fund 12 new institutions, Okorocha said, “These universities, polytechnics and colleges of education will run under a Public Private Partnership arrangement.

“There are different models for the running of these new institutions, but the dream behind it is that our children, who are the highest in seeking university education in the whole of the federation, will have more opportunities of having access to university education.”
