Spiritualist in court for defrauding, poisoning client


A 55-year-old spiritual fortune teller, Malam Isa Haruna, has been slammed a N500, 000 bail bond by a Sabongari (No Man's Land) Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly cheating one of his clients.


Malam Haruna, who is a resident of Rijiyar Lemo quarters in Kano metropolis, was arraigned on a two-count charge of cheating and causing hurt through poisoning, contrary to sections 322 and 249 of the Penal Code Law.


The prosecutor, Inspector Jacob Yaduma told the court that the accused person committed the offences between 2016 and 2018.


He said the complainant, one Bello Isa, reported to the police that the accused person had between 2016 and 2018 approached him and obtained the sum of Two million, seven hundred thousand Naira (N2.7m) on the pretext of praying for him to be able to marry a woman.



After two years with no results, the complainant reported the matter to the police.


The First Information Report said: “Between the years 2016 and 2018, at Rijiyar Lemo quarters Kano, you Malam Isa Haruna of Rijiyar Lemo approached, induced and dishonestly obtained the total sum of N2.7m from one Bello Isa of same address under the pretext of praying for him to marry the girl of his heart desire which you knew to be false.”


The police report further said that the accused person gave the complainant some concoction with intent to cause hurt to him.



When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and the presiding judge, Chief Magistrate Muhktar Garba Dandago, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000, with a reliable surety and adjourned the case to March 21.
