Walking on the bridge, committing suicide now an offence in Lagos - Police Commissioner

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni today said committing suicide was an offence under the law.

He made the remark after the rescue of a woman who tried to jump off Third Mainland bridge into the Lagoon.

Owoseni lamented the increasing rate of suicide in the country. He also revealed that henceforth, it was now an offence for individuals to walk on bridges in the state and that no vehicle would be allowed to stop on any bridge in the state henceforth in order to prevent suicide incidences.

  3. "He also revealed that henceforth, it was now an offence for individuals to walk on bridges in the state... "

This is a most daft law. Just because some individuals want to kill themselves? If you have a bridge that already has pedestrian walkways, how can you stop pedestrians from walking in them? What about the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge that has sidewalks which are extremely popular with joggers?

This Owoseni is showing his unintelligent part. Lazy managers create superfluous laws in reaction to a few misdemeanours. The fact is that there is no law that can stop someone who wants to take his or her life.

    1. Just my thought! These police people are so lazy. Is it in his purview to promulgate law without recourse to the State Assembly? ( I mean individuals walking on Lagos bridges or cars stopping on bridges) What a ridiculous statement.

  4. Suicide is not and cannot be an offence, ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IS AN OFFENCE.

  5. Rather than address the government that is the CAUSE of the "crime," he is threatening the EFFECT, an outcome of APC's economic abracadabra.
