Nigeria’s solitary hope in the table tennis singles event at the Rio Olympics, Aruna Quadri, defeated Yang Wang from Slovakia on Sunday 4-1 in the men singles to advance into the third round.
Quadri, who had a bye into round two, won the first set 11-7 before losing the second set 7-11.
The Portugal-based player went on to take the next three sets 11-7, 11-9 and 11-6.
He will now face Chih-Yuan Chuang from Chinese Taipei later on Sunday for a place into the fourth round.
Earlier in the day, Segun Toriola lost to Japan’s Niwa Koki in four sets to two.
