FG removes Bsc/HND dichotomy, moves to join polytechnics with universities

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu yesterday confirmed the abolition of the dichotomy that hitherto existed between the Higher National Diploma (HND) and University degree otherwise known as B.Sc..

The Minister who announced the official position of the government in Abuja yesterday said the stories that has been on social media has element of mischief.

“The dichotomy between Bsc and HND has been eliminated,” he said.

Sources also gathered that the National Council on Establishments (NCE) has also given approval for the abolition of the dichotomy.

The Minister, last month announced that the government had concluded plans to abolish the dichotomy that hitherto existed between these two educational qualifications, but a reliable source in the Ministry said the policy announcement was put on hold pending the decision of the National Council on Establishments and the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

“This is serious education policy that has effect on millions of Nigerian students. So, the Minister is very careful not to make mistake that would further compound the issue. To this end, he (the Minister) decided to wait for the input of all stakeholders,” the source said.

  1. Entry requirements for HND and BSc are not the same. How can the qualifications be the same. In the United Kingdom from where we got our educational system, are HND and BSc considered the same? If we want to make them the same, we should convert the polytechnics to universities and subject them to university standards in entry qualifications, equipment, staffing and curriculum. You don't do it by decree!

    1. The UK educational system you are quoting does not have an ond/nd as the entry requirements for their HND programme. hence someone in UK running a HND program will only spend a maximum of 2 years. but in Nigeria, the entry requirement is ond/nd which of course you must spent 2 years to obtain before going for applying for the HND programme that has a duration of 2 years making a total of 4 years. Moreover, the curriculum of HND in UK is not the same here. That's is the reason some schools in the same UK and other countries will even allow HND holders to do a master degree directly without pgd.
