Liverpool are going after Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.
Vermaelen has two more years remaining on his current contract but could seek the exit door after falling behind the likes of Javier Mascherano, Gerard Pique and Jeremy Mathieu in the defensive pecking order.
El Mundo Deportivo says Liverpool are willing to offer him a chance to reignite his career by setting aside £12m to bring him to Anfield.
The report adds Vermaelen's English wife is in favour of a move back to the Premier League.
But the Reds will face competition for Vermaelen's signature with Turkish outfit Besiktas matching Liverpool's £12m valuation and are also open to taking him on a season-long loan.
