#BringBackOurGirls group blasts Melaye for allegedly threatening to beat Tinubu's wife

The Lagos chapter of the #BringBackOurGirls group has lambasted Dino Melaye for his threat to “beat up” his colleague, Oluremi Tinubu, during a disagreement in a closed-door session held by the senators.

In a statement issued Wednesday and jointly signed by Yemisi Ransome-Kuti, Aisha Oyebode, Ayo Obe, and Habiba Balogun, the group described Mr. Melaye’s actions as “disgusting”.

“While the issues of the senate and their disagreements remain strictly their issue, it is pertinent to put an end to this recurring act of threat of violence against women,” the group said in the statement also signed by Yemi Adamolekun, Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, Ngozi Iwere, Olalere Babasola, and Adwoa Edun.

“It is further disheartening that there is no indication to suggest that the leadership of the Senate has referred this weighty allegation for investigation by its Committee on Ethics and Privileges.”

Those who witnessed the Tuesday incident revealed that trouble started when Mr. Melaye (APC, Kogi) urged the Senate to descend heavily on members who had offered to serve as prosecution witnesses in the ongoing forgery case against Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

Mrs. Tinubu (APC, Lagos) had reportedly criticised Mr. Melaye’s attitude of “always threatening people and behaving childishly and at times like a thug”.

In response, Mr. Melaye was said to have charged towards Mrs. Tinubu, who is the wife of national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, saying, “Look this is not Bourdillon (in reference to the famous Lagos residence of Mr. Tinubu), I will beat you up,…. impregnate you and nothing will happen.”

The #BringBackOurGirls group said Mr. Melaye’s actions sent the country back to the dark ages, and called on the National Assembly to stop tolerating “misogynists” like Mr. Melaye in their ranks.

“With the likes of Senator Dino Melaye in the Nigerian Senate, the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill which we are campaigning for might never see the light of day,” the group said.

“How can we encourage women to take elective positions without fear when the senate, which has only seven (7) female members out of the 109 members, has men like Senator Dino Melaye threatening the few that have dared the odds to get into politics?

“How can we put an end to violence against girls and women when those who lead/make these laws are guilty of the same acts? Are there no rules and code of conduct in The Senate? Are there no penalties for irresponsible behavior?

“Our future and that of our children depend on the actions we take now and we must put an end to this recurring act of violence, abuse and threats.”

The group noted that with the Lagos #BringBackOurGirls group being members of the constituency represented by Mrs. Tinubu, they are calling for an action against Mr. Melaye.

“The Nigerian Senate should not aid and abet him this time,” they said.

“If we, as BBOG Group, are asking the State to protect our girls, then such statements in our hallowed chambers should most definitely be strongly condemned and properly dealt with.”

  1. Dino Melaye is an absolute fool, and so are most of his fellow so-called lawmakers. He threatened to rape his fellow senator and the senate of ignoramuses let him stay. What is Kogi state saying about this, or are they totally ignorant of what their disgraceful representative is doing in Abuja? Nigeria is a disgrace to humanity and God himself knows it. Is this fool truly the chairman of a committee, under the leadership of his conjoined and criminal twin Saraki? President Obama of the USA never set foot on Nigeria's soil during eight years of his presidency, because he wants no association with fools like these. Nigeria deserves to die, not live.

  5. We now know the political coloration of the so BBOG which was used to bring down GEJ,s government. What has the issue between two senators got to do with a pressure group who claim to be searching for the so called chibok girls? Their so called leases have been settled with commissioner ship and head of NPA, What else do they want? Their man has assumed power and has settled them, so they should disband and go and share whatever they have Ben settled with for a job well done. On the melaye and remi altercation, we should not cast aspersions until we have known what truly transpired. If something was this wrong, the senate will constitute a panel and we will find out the actual thing that happened. Melaye should not use uncouth language while remi should not flaunt her weight because she has a powerful husband.

  6. Dino has always been a lowlife. He has no interest of this country at heart, he is in that chamber for money, he will be disgraced out like he did at the house of rep. He has no regard for women, Tokunbo and Alero left him when they almost died from constant beating. He is a lowlife.

  7. Those of you abusing Melaye are talking trash, I'm a woman like her, she should not use her husband position in the country or her party to talk any how to people of her calibar otherwise, she will get what she want, perharps they planted her their as a spice

  8. There is a saying that says respect is reciprocate, she should know how to talk to people even if her husband is Buhari, let her control her mouth, Melaye is not a mad man by saying he will beat her up, I am surely she might have run her mouth carelessly on him therefore, she deserve that staement from Melaye, she should not use her power and position to intimidate others

  9. Firstly, BBOG should put the SHUT to the UP! They are not to take the matter in the capacity they are fronting. They should stop posing as a women's right group when their function is solely for the Chibok girls. Any member of the BBOG could react individually and stop that rubbish!

Secondly, Mrs. Tinubu got what she deserves! Her sudden attack towards Dino simply because he spoke out his opinion/suggestions shows that the woman is wild and highly disrespectful. Mr. Tinubu should be ashamed that his wife has exposed that she has disgraced not only him, but also womanhood. Is that not a full-grown man, older than she is, that she was vigorously trying to belittle and tear down his ego? Did people not think of that? She is the thug here because if she hadn't incited all these with her ill manner, this wouldn't have erupted. Bad mouth. After all, there have been more fights between the male folks in the Senate then there have been with women. Dino would have lashed out the same way to a man if the insulting statements came from a man. So, enough with this dangerous act of unreasonably putting women on the pedestal of royalty, even the rotten and ill-mannered ones.

Thirdly, I'm advising the Nigerian Eye to be more careful in their posts and stop indirectly luring Their readers to buy-in their own perspectives and take their side's in matters such as this. Observation of the story shows that the publisher of the story presented Dino's comments in bolder and bigger font, indicating that he was harshly screaming and shouting at Remi. Whereas, Remi's comments were presents in the normal smaller font, indicating she was speaking just normal without passion. If I may ask, were the staff of the Nigerian Eye in the room when it all happened? Please be careful and sensitive with your posts.

Finally, Dino is a very big disgrace, not only to his family, the Senate and manhood, but also to me! If a man cannot control his temper and tongue towards the tearing outbursts of a woman, then he's not only immature, but also have nothing to do with keeping a woman for a wife. There's no difference between a mad man and he who argues with him. There are better days Dino would have calmly and maturely handled Remi's insult, and he'd be surprised that other senators would fight for him and descend upon Remi. He got it very wrong. Imagine the shot he spat out! VERY SHAMEFUL!

This government in general has a bad foundation. They bad seeds planted are now germinating and some are even being harvested already. Actually, APC is really still confused and clueless.

    God help Nigeria!
