Widespread fear and panic as Oyo residents flee homes over earthquake

Residents of communities in Saki West Council Area of Oyo State yesterday abandoned their homes in panic, following reported earthquake.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the communities included Medina, Balako, Salam Salam, Dauru-Salam and parts of Okesuna.

The residents told NAN that with the threat, the likelihood of earthquake was not impossible, as the noise being heard from beneath the earth surface was frightening.

A housewife, Fatima Ishola, said noise from below the earth surface had been on the increase in the last couple of months.

“But it got to an alarming level this week and particularly today (Wednesday) when the underground noise and movement became too enormous and unbearable,” she added.

Another resident, Mr. Ismail Muideen, appealed for government intervention, noting that residents had fled their homes.

NAN reports that government agencies visited the affected areas several times in the last two months.

The Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and an indigene of the area, Mr. Musah Abdulwasi, confirmed the development to NAN.

He said: “I have been to the areas with senior members of the Geology Department from the University of Ibadan.

“They hinted that there is likelihood of heavy movement of rocks in the water channel beneath the ground in the affected areas.

“They advised that evacuation of residents is the only solution to tremor and possible earthquake after establishing degree of tremor.

“Honestly, they told us that no one could ascertain for now the degree of the tremor and whether it will lead to earthquake or not.”

The Caretaker Chairman of Saki West Local Government, Mr. Kareem Adekoge, told NAN that agencies, which visited the areas, allayed fears.

“Besides the Ministry of Environment, the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) has visited the area.

“They promised to plant a device that will be used to monitor the tremor level. They said the situation might not be as bad as thought.”

He, however, confirmed that a middle-aged man died, following the incident.

Adekoge said: “I think the man was hypertensive and could not bear the threat of the noise and movement. So we lost him to the incident.

“I heard some people are relocating, but it is only tenants that can do that; will a landlord relocate leaving his property behind?”

  1. Why wont there be earthquake When in most cities in Nigeria every building drill their own Borehole. In Abuja, an estate like EFAB Estate that has over 5000 buildings has no centralized sewage system and every building there has borehole just like Gwarimpa . The estate is just near Gwarimpa. Therefore, Why wont there be an earth quake.

    1. Earth quake or tremors are not as a result of bore hole drilling
There are fault lines underneath and these are what slides and glides during tremor
There are towns on top of such lines that is why you have earth quake and tremors in Japan, Los Angeles, unfortunately Saki happen to be the place on such lines in Nigeria and it spreads to even IBADAN I remember as a student in the 80s in IBADAN we all ran from our hostel when there was tremor
Though it's good for Govt to provide water for its citizenry using the water boards, what happen if they are not doing that? drink sewage water NO
Let's just get our facts straight about earth quakes and tremors
      Thanks

  2. It's high time for government to bring back potable tap water to the country.. Drilling of bore as an alternative means is very dangerous to the environment..

  4. Portable water has become history in Nigeria.Funds that could have been used for this purpose to serve communities and thus create jobs have been stolen.

  5. This is as a result of intense heat that has made the magma to be in a molten form and hence mobile which will force it's way out through cavalier and fault lines.
Aside the expansion and contractions they burning of woods for charcoal is a major factor which our government has not curbed.
Indiscriminate cutting of trees either big or small trees unabated is another factor.
When burning of woods is on you can not sleep in such areas.
They have gone to wake a sleeping dog .
I hope it is not too late to stop now cos continuous burning will increase the fluidity and will come in hot molten magma to the surface.
Evacuation is necessary now to prevent loss of life.

  6. Nice thoughts guys! However, let's handle every instance like this as a new case with possible different cause of event. I'd suggest the cause be investigated to forestall reoccurence. Again, more that it might not be drilling activities that culminated in an earthquake at Shaki. May God keep us all and give us more credible leaders and sincere followers.

  7. No need to panic. It's just a secret underground nuclear missle program run by the Nigerian government with help from N. Korea. Hehe!
