NLC, TUC propose N56,000 as new minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly proposed N56,000 as the new minimum wage to the Federal Government as against the present N18,000.

The NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, said this at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

Wabba said both the NLC and the TUC made the formal demand on the proposed national minimum wage to the Federal Government on Tuesday.

“I can say now authoritatively that as of yesterday (Tuesday) we made a formal proposal to the Federal Government of N56,000 to be the new minimum wage.

“The demand has been submitted officially to government and we hope that the tripartite system to look at the review will actually be set up to look at it

“Our argument is that, yes, it is true that the economy is not doing well, but the law stated that wages for workers must be review after every five years.

“So, the issue must be looked into by the Federal Government and workers should not be seen as sleeping on their rights,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the NLC president as saying at the forum.

Wabba recalled that the last review of the national minimum wage was done in 2011, saying the setting up of a tripartite committee to review the newly proposed national minimum wage was long overdue.

He said it was imperative that government should set up the tripartite committee for the review of the new minimum wage.

  1. The Nigerian labour leaders are truly deluded, the states that find it difficult to pay N18000 are the ones they are asking to pay N56000. The demand may be reasonable in view of devaluation of the naira but do the states have the resources to pay with dwindling federal allocation following fall in oil price?

  2. Minimum wage is not a legal obligation on employers in Nigeria. Labour unions are making noise.

  5. Guys, oil price is down, economy is down, but values keep changing. Therefore, 'law stated that wages for workers must be review after every five years so as to meet up with changes in values of things around''
thus values is directly proportional to wages. Now value of things are so high, 18k can't even pay transportation to work. government insisting on not reviewing wages gave birth to corruptions in the system, whereby a public servant decides to look for a way out of the menace.

  6. Nigerians are fed up of increase in wages and all what not. All we need is a disciplined and clean society, which include being responsible and accountable on your duty posts. As president, be honest and straightforward so your subordinate will take queue even to the lowest rank and fine. Nigeria Labour Congress, Road Transport, Petroleum, Lecturers, Marketing etc, etc we all have rolls to play to correct the ills in our society and stop legalizing crimes for our economy to be stable and viable for our Naira to gain weight. Increase of salary is not our problems but rather accountability and responsibity is our goal for way forward

  8. If the Labour union met well for our dear country by now they would have been talking much about corruption, staging protesting against any corrupt person whose case is currently been discussed and work closely with the EFCC to fish out corrupt people in the service. They are busy talking about minimum wage that corrupt people have used to enrich theirself.

  9. Wonder shall never end!!! So, Trade unions still exist in the country??? With all the undoings of Buhari administration, they have nothing to say ??? In the midst of unpaid salaries, fuel scarcity, bad exchange rate, inflation, unemployment, economic depression, retrenchment, insecurity, Boko haram, Fulani Herdsmen incessant attacks....etc,etc,...the best solution to all these is #56,000 minimum wage??? In fact, the Trade unions are as clueless as Buhari himself...Well,as events are unfolding...
