We’ve met December deadline to defeat Boko Haram — Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said yesterday that the Nigerian military had met the December deadline to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

The minister said this during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had, upon assuming office, issued a December 31 deadline to the military to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won.

“I can confidently say this because just recently, I led a group of 33 journalists from both the local and international media to the hot bed of the insurgency, that is, Maiduguri, Kondugua, Kaoure and Bama.

“Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops.”

He said the military presence could be felt ‘’every few metres along the road; at a point along that road we were just a kilometre to Sambisa forest.

“They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”

Mohammed, however, said that though there were still cases of suicide bombings, it was pertinent to note that such was the nature if insurgency globally.

“Unlike a war between two armies, an insurgency never ends with arms victory

“Even in countries like Colombia where insurgency was supposed to have ended decades ago, attacks like this still happen.”

He said that the insurgents had adopted a new style of attacking soft targets like motor parks, schools, entertainment centres, religious centres, killing innocent people mostly women and children.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to support the military in the fight against terrorism in the country, saying that the military had availed itself creditably.

“It is our turn as civilians to give them our support; to realise that the war they are fighting is not their war alone, but our war, hence we must own the war.”

The minister disclosed that a national security campaign had commenced to raise awareness among Nigerians about the war, the sacrifices of our troops, and how to stamp out the remnant of the war.

“Jingles are being played on national radio and television as part of the campaign in order to keep the media better informed about the war, so that they can also better inform Nigerians,” he said.

Mohammed also said that an ad-hoc committee, comprising media representatives as well as intelligence agencies, would be inaugurated to regularly be updated about the war in order to better inform the public.

  2. Another "Fabu" What does "Lie" Mohammed mean by meeting the December deadline when boko haram are still attacking soft spots like schools, markets, churches, mosques etc. Are the soft spots not much important? These are where the masses are found. In other word, Lie Mohammed is saying that the common man is not important. Fools.

  7. History has proven that you can stop a War by preventing it. Once started no one knows when it will end. The English once had a 100 years war. Somalia since early 1990's still rages. Setting a deadline is putting the cart before the horse. This conflict in the North East is a war that territory is not important. Boko Ha ram must surrender, their leaders and financiers arrested and be disbanded for this war to end.

  8. Self assessor. Lie Mohammed. Can the residents of these areas give the same verdict as you, those whose houses are deserted?
We are not surprised. Lie is your name. Lying is your trade.

    1. I'm in mubi but u can tell u that he doesn't even have the knowledge of the area he is talking about. And Bama is not the hottest area of BH. Let press freely go round even those areas he claimed he went. When he went to Bama how many troops went with him? The road is yet to be opened because the military said it's not secure. So what is this man saying?

  9. Lie Lie has come again. Boko Harum is still very active. Can you kill a large python and leave under the new? Even at its death, the snake is feared. Mothers and their young ones will never sleep in that house.Boko Harum is not even dead. Their leaders are still alive. They are planning. They are dangerous. Instead of humbly accepting their failures, Lie lie has come again. When they strike again I wish one of your children will be hit. You regard suicide bombing as normal. Kai!

  11. Only the comment from Francis22shame makes sense. Well it's been said that common sense is not common to all. Take it ir leave it, the war against boko haram has been won. Reasons: They can no longer lay claim to any territory. They now run away from our gallant military unlike before when the reverse is the case. Due to fear and disorientation, they now attack soft spots killing only innocent and harmless civilians(this is not uncommon even to the most advanced nations.) They use innocent kids as suicide bombers because they are short of fighters. They now ride on Horses, Carmels, bicycles and when they are lucky enough to have motocycles, you will get to see 4 or 5 of them on a single bike(this is because their resources are now limited and their financiers weakened.) Infact, the way they now operate is not different than a common petty thief! They are simply trying to remain relevant while the real truth is that they are no longer RELEVANT! Kudos to our gallant military men. God bless and keep them all. And God bless Nigeria...KayJoe
