Pope expels gay priest from Vatican

The Vatican, on Saturday, fired a senior priest, Krzysztof Charamsa, who publicly came out as gay on the eve of a major meeting of church leaders to discuss the Church’s stance on social issues such as divorce and homosexuality.

A statement by a spokesman for Pope Francis described the Polish priest’s action as “very serious and irresponsible,” adding that he would be immediately sacked from his post as a theologian in the Vatican.

The statement read, “The decision to make such a pointed statement on the eve of the opening of the synod appears very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the synod assembly to undue media pressure.”

Charamsa, who is a mid-level official in the Vatican bureaucracy’s dealing with church doctrine, flanked by his Spanish boyfriend while donning his priest’s collar, on Saturday, had earlier told a news conference in Rome that he was compelled to speak out against the “hypocrisy and paranoia” that he said had shaped the Church’s attitude to sexual minorities.

The 43-year-old priest said, “I’m out of the closet, and I’m very happy about that. I want to be an advocate for all sexual minorities and their families who have suffered in silence.”

He presented a 10-point “liberation manifesto” against “institutionalised homophobia in the Church,” which he said particularly oppressed the gay men who, according to him, make up the majority of priests.

He also revealed plans for a book about his 12 years at the heart of a Vatican bureaucracy, only just recovering from a scandal under previous Pope Benedict XVI over the influence of a “gay lobby” among senior clergy.

  1. I think it's high time the church allowed priests to marry their wives as in the days of old.(In the beginning, God created them husband and wife, i.e Adam and Eve, this model stands and has no devinely permissible alternative).
In the same way the last Pope resigned when he knew his human body was no longer able to match the exigencies of office, the church should allow these men of God to marry as instructed by apostle Paul and disband the current superhuman posturing of priests and priesthood bearing in mind that hormones and blood are also in them and may be prone to respond to their dictate.
Allowing Catholic priests to marry as institutionalized by God save the church some embarrassments even though can't be wholly eliminated since human beings are by nature sinful and need the continuous connection to God's grace for a guaranteed Christlike living. Atondu Akaan

  2. Allowing Priests to marry will in no way prevent those who are sexually weak to exhibit their sexuality. Lay men like you and I are allowed to marry and that has not prevented us from engaging in adultery, rape, paedophilia, sodomy, etc. Married men also desire to marry more wives. Once upon a time, Priests marry. Celibacy was introduced for a reason and the Church came up with this after carefully x-raying its merits and demerits. A would-be-priest has eight or more years to back out of the profession before final ordination. There is no fuss if one decides to pull out bcos he won't be able to cope with the requirements. After all one can serve God in diverse ways as a married man. So, if you know you can't do without sex, please pull out honourably instead of cheating on ursef by breaking ur vows secretly. The Catholic Church has seen worse betrayal than this and is waxing stronger. I urge those who may wish to serve God on the Altar but have huge appetite for sex like myself to consider becoming a Pentecostal Pastor in any of the protestant churches or perhaps a Cathechist in the Catholic Church.

  3. Must this man be a priest? Why didn't he resign when he discovered that he can cope with celibacy no more? His own is even worse bcos he is engaged to a co-man and not even a woman. He is been mischievous by alleging that most priests are gay like himself. How many priests does he know?

  5. Priesthood is not by force. If u can't do what is in it, u don't go into it. Every1 knows priest ain't allowed to marry. It's for pple who wants to leave a chaste life and serve God all d days of there life. St Paul never married and he served God well till he died. Any1 dt can't do it should not go into it. It's better not to b married as a priest.

    1. Paul was not a priest! He was an Apostle to the gentiles and had the gift of celibacy (some are made eunuchs by birth). The Bible states very clearly that a Bishop should be a husband of one wife.....not a forced eunuch!
In the new testament, every believer is a priest, though.
