We will support Buhari to end carnage by Boko Haram – Saraki


The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki on Monday assured that he will do everything possible through legislative powers to ensure that the carnage posed by boko haram sect in Borno and other parts of the north east be a thing of the past.

Saraki made the assurance when he led other member delegation to a courtesy call on Governor Kashim Shettima at the Government House Maiduguri.



He said he was in Maiduguri, Borno state capital with his entourage for on the spot assessment of the activities of boko haram and to identify with victims and people of the state over the spate of killings and bombings by insurgents, so that government will come out with better strategy aimed at ending the activities of the dreaded boko haram in the north east sub region.

” We are here in Borno for the first time after our inauguration to identify with victims and people of Borno state over the spate of killings and bombings by insurgents.

“We condoled with our people over the agony they found themselves as a result of the ongoing crisis.
“On behalf of the Senate, we will do everything to see to the end of Boko Haram through motions and resolutions to let the whole world know that we are capable to do our best to stop this carnage perpetrated by boko haram madness.

“We will set aside every needed things to resetlle our people of the north east and rebuild all the communities destroyed by insurgents.

“We will support the executive under the leadership of president Mohammed Buhari who is committed to see to the end of this madness and to ensure that all areas destroyed by insurgents are rebuild in no distant future”. Saraki assured.


Responding, Governor Shettima thanked the Senate president and other members of his delegation for taking their time to visit Borno despite the security challenges posed by insurgents.

He commended Dr. Saraki for leading a powerful senate delegation to see on the spot assessment of the damages done to some areas in the state, and solicited support from the Senate leadership to move for a motion aimed at establishing a ‘Rebuilding and Development Commission’ for the people of the north east, just like what is obtained from the Niger- Delta region.

Shettima informed the senate President that the activities of the insurgents which started since 2009 has left thousands of people dead, and property worth billions of naira destroyed, stressing that the state government under his leadership has been spending substantive amount of funds for the upkeep of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various camps in the state, in addition to other support rendered to security agencies who sacrificed their lives in the fight against the sect members.

He lamented that due to the lingering crisis which has led to the sacking of over 20 Local Government Areas of the state with over a million people displaced, hundreds of women were forcefully turned into widows prematurely, childrens were made orphans as well as public structures such as schools, hospitals, roads that were also destroyed in the state.

He however thanked the Senate delegations for donating the sum of N10 million to assist in the upkeep of the IDPs in the state.

Those who accompanied the senate President to Maiduguri were Senate Leader Mohammed Ali Ndume , Senate Deputy Chief Whip Francis Alimikhena, Senators Mohammed Hassan, Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Danjuma Goje and chief of staff to the senate president, senator Isa Galaudu.


It was also observed that the senate president also paid traditional homage to the Shehu of Borno at his palace, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Elkanemi where he reassured the monarch of the federal government and the legislative arms commitment to see to the end of boko haram in the region.
The delegation also took time and visited some IDP camps despite the tight security and blockage of some major roads in the city.

  1. Saraki, Boko Haram is not a legislative issue, so stop wasting your time on that subject. Let us know what you intend to do about corruption in the country. But you cannot, since you and your family have lived a life of corruption at all times. Having Saraki as the Senate President at a time that the nation is determined to get rid of corruption is a major bottle neck. Saraki cannot have the conscience to fight corruption, the same thing that he has lived for and will certainly die for.

  2. What a naive statement to say ''We will support Buhari.....'' as if it is optional to do so. Of course, Nigerian lawmakers erroneously think they hold offices to enrich themselves,make laws that immunize them against any reproach for their misdeed and make rhetorical debates at the expense of making the electorate more comfortable than they met them. May God visit Nigeria.
