'Buhari should give looters of the nation’s treasury amnesty'

A former Chairman of Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, Senator Aloysius Etok, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to introduce what he termed ‘self amnesty programme’ for looters of the nation’s treasury.

Etok, who represented Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District at the National Assembly from 2007 to 2015, said the idea is to enable those who looted the country’s funds from the different sectors to willingly return what is left of their loot.

The senator commended the efforts of President Buhari in tackling corruption.

He said as a senator he started the anti-graft war with pension fund managers that had looted the money meant for pensioners.

Explaining his idea of the self amnesty programme in an interview with journalists in Calabar, Etok said those who looted the nation’s treasury as being gradually revealed by the President Buhari-led administration should be allowed to bring back to government coffers what they have left.

He said, “Let us have self amnesty programme for those who looted the economy. If for instance you have stolen N6 and you have eaten N2, you should be allowed to return the N4 that is left. That should be the starting point.”

Do you agree with Mr Etok?

  1. I totally disagree with this man. This will mean giving other corrupt public officers green light to steal. As it stands PMB represents and is the only hope we have to start getting things right. The president must not listen to the advice of those thieves beging for soft landing. The president has the mandate of ordinary Nigerians not that of elites.

  2. This idea is preposterous; I think we are beginning to abuse the concept of amnesty. A thief is a thief

  3. How much way Im wan return and how much way I'm steal? Mean while, the return must include all properties he has too and should continue until he can pay back the remaining, for which he must find work...

  4. Return the one that is left, then the anti-graft body would decide what to do next....no amnesty for criminality p-e-r-I-o-d

  5. Look at who is talking. Do we really have shame? This man is just a big fool. Any way, Senator, we have heard you.

  6. Lol... Imagine his way of thinking, "if he has stolen 6 and has eaten 2 naira , he should be allowed to return the remaining 4 naira". My question is Mr senator, how then will he pay for his sins. Or are u saying it is OK to steal? This is another GEJ speaking in a different way. Funny ppl we have has leaders. Lol.

  7. What a trash suggestion from a so-called former Senator. It is as if something is seriously wrong with the genetic make-up of the black man save for a very few like our President. How can this type of thinking take us anywhere as a nation? Allow this garbage to get close to the position of direct leadership & he would mess-up everything like his brother has just done. Animal.

  8. Now I understand why the last senate was in comatose. With this kind of low life former senator, Lord have mercy. Someone should check his sanity. This man is a thief and a fool. He is suggesting Buhari should start protecting treasury looters. God forbid.

  11. I see why women are the.one doing the hard job .to keep the family going. The men wait to get chance to rake millions, in the name of amnesty.what a character.

  12. Yes sincerely agree with him

  13. Idiotic idea! Return what is left!! Where exactly do u come from?

    ReplyDelete
  14. For me. I think there's some sense in what he says. But buhari can use that to lure them to tell how much the looted, what they have spent and what is left. Get and recover from them. This will prompt others to do the same. So u are sure 90% have returned all their loots, they don't need to go to court again. They have given evidence of their atrocities. Then they should all be jailed. Cos the court is our biggest problem in the country. They could delay the matter forever.

  15. This is a shit of talk. Does amnesty mean injustice/justice override? This man should be investigated. Or should go to religious settings to request amnesty not from government. No amnesty for the fraudlers. They should return all and be prosecuted as a lesson to other generations to come.

  16. This man has no common sense. That's all I will say.

  17. If I understand correctly, he is proposing this as a starting point. Other things could follow. Recovering loot through the legal system is a big challenge. We all saw how a court told a thief who stole billions of pension fund was told to return a ridiculous amount.
Return what is left (including properties) and then we can decide on how what is eaten plus accruing interest will be returned. If the crook can't return every thing, he pays the balance with prison term (though prison sentence causes the nation a lot of mo). That may trust a better result.

  18. Man steals GSM phone and gets a life sentence!! Another steals millions in naira /dollars and the 'so Nigerian elite' are requesting for amnesty!!
Why are their voices very quiet for the common man?

  19. Dis is a total abuse of amnesty, meaning dat all armed robbers shud also b given d same.
