IG orders ‘stop and search’ on major highways

The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has ordered a special ‘stop and search’ on roads and highways nationwide, with emphasis on roads in and out of major cities and towns.

A statement by the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Shogunle, on Tuesday in Abuja, urged the citizens to bear with the Nigeria Police Force during “this security operation which is a temporary measure put in place to address the intelligence received.”

It said the special security measure was in no way a return of roadblocks.

“Any unprofessional conduct should be reported at www.stopthe bribes.net or nearest Police Station,” the statement said.

It advised the public to cooperate with police operatives by providing answers to questions that might be asked as well as allow their vehicles to be searched.

  1. Stop and search means stop and give us money, that's the problem. They will ask you for your license, they will ask you for your registration etc, that's the problem. Once they do that, they are looking for a way to extract money from you. It never fails. How can you stop that from happening, that's the question? Giving me an e-mail address to report misbehaviour is not the answer. Remember that most drivers do not have access to e-mail.

  2. Why did you at the initial stage cancel road blocks? The absent of Soldiers on the road make it easy for BH to transport whatever they want to anywhere in the country. Pls, find another strategy to ensure we have adequate security of lives and properties in this country.
