Buhari will not extend his corruption probe beyond Jonathan's administration - Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari will not extend his corruption probe beyond the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the presidency has said.

Mr. Buhari, who is currently on official visit to the United States, has consistently vowed to investigate and bring to book, persons who looted the country’s funds.

The president said on Tuesday he will arrest and prosecute past ministers and other officials who stole Nigeria’s oil and diverted government’s money to personal accounts.

But the Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs to Mr. Buhari, Femi Adesina, said the president will limit his anti-corruption war to the immediate past administration in the country.

He said Mr. Buhari will not waste time in probing the administrations of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalam Abubakar, Sani Abacha and Ibrahim Babangida.

He said even before he was sworn in to office on May 29, the president had categorically stated that he would not extend his corruption probe beyond the Jonathan government.

“If you recall, that was already settled before he got inaugurated as president. He has said he will not waste time digging into the far past,” Mr. Adesina said.

“The far past will includes Obasanjo and others. But the president has said he will not waste time to go that far.”

Before leaving office, Mr. Jonathan had said any probe by the new government would be seen as a “witch hunt” if it fails to go beyond his administration.

Speaking on criticisms over President Buhari’s decision to travel to the U.S. with his son, Yusuf, the presidential spokesperson said Mr. Buhari did not breach any rule.

He said it was a normal practice for presidents to travel with members of their families, citing the example of American presidents who travel abroad with their wives and children.

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with the president travelling with one of his sons. It is an acceptable and standard practice. He could go with up to four members of his family.

“Don’t forget that when former President Bill Clinton visited Nigeria while he was in office, he came with his daughter, Chelsea.

“President Barak Obama travels with his children and so the President of Nigeria can travel out with three or four of his children. Late President Umaru Yar’Adua used to travel with two of his sons and one of his grandchildren,” he said.

Mr. Adesina described the outcome of the president’s official visit to the US as “a roaring success on every side.”

“There are good returns. It is an investment that will yield very handsome returns.”

  1. We have heard, this is a direct repression on the region that did not support him. A way of alienating his major opposition

  2. I think this is sickening, that the fight against corruption will dig back only six years ago. I think OBJ's exclusion was due to the destruction of his PDP card. A decent fight to corruption will be to start it from the inception of democracy in 1999 and not 6 years ago.

  3. Its good to arrest all the aposstles of "stealing is no corruption " and let them vomit and shit out all their briganades and thievry

  4. Umpire I am not surprised about your comment because it represents your name. You are obviously blindly following the words of your former clueless leader. If you like call it witch hunt, Buhari doesn't have all the time. It is a wise and acceptable thing to probe the last administration considering their recklessness and lack of respect for the rule of law which has never been this obvious. If you guys are not comfortable with it ... You can go to hell...

    1. Criticize objectively, Institutions are strengthened to fight corruption and not the president. So time is not a reason to avoid justice. If Nazi perpetrators are still being persecuted 65 years after world war 2, then 16 years is a short time in Nigeria. We can refer this to freeing Shagari and locking Ekweme. Justice for all. And argue with reasoning cos only illiterates with no basis to argue hide sheepishly behind go to hell.

    2. Mr. Umpire, the president has the power to strengthen the institutions to fight corruption. GEJ weakened them, that's why EFCC was inactive and DSS was like a media/propaganda department. God bless Nigeria

    3. Anonymous 1:37pm. May Heaven mete the same judgment to you concerning all areas you are guilty, as it seemed right unto you for Buhari to Probe only the immediate past administration.

    4. Justice to some criminals and liberty to others is case that God never winks at. Probe on corruption should be for all involved, so that others will fear. May God guide President Buhari in all his actions.

    5. Anonymous 8:11 PM my judgement is not in your hand. In another way, the heaven you call will judge you first and any one finger you poiny goes back at you. Most of you guys here are just pity party. Number one if GEJ and his culprits hands are clean why are they afraid of probe? Number two when they got the chance to probe the administration before them, what stopped them? Three why was their government free for all and if you that is talking about judgement truely have some level of sense, you will know that Buhari has every right to make his decision. If his decision is to sanitize and probe from last government it is because that last government has direct impact on the present one. You people should go away with your hate, tribalistic and religious reasoning. The same religious issue without the true knowledge of who you worship is what is killing this country...

  8. There is no way this probe won't be a witch hunt if it is limited to only one administration. There is nothing like limited justice, it has to be total. Anyway y d confusion, GMB said he will probe all criminals including his party members while having an interview with C. Amanpour 2 or 3 days ago in CNN and now his media adviser is saying something else. This only means one thing DECEIT. God will help us

  12. President Buhari should not probe only GEJ's administration. His probe should start from 1999,if not it will be regarded as a war against the South-South and the South-East.Infact,he should ensure that state Governors do the same.In a way that Udom should probe Akpabio and Ambode should probe Fashola. Not just Wike getting ready to probe Ameachi and Buhari getting ready to probeJohnathan and ministers, while obj is relaxing in ottah farm and Danjuma with IBB and the likes of them enjoying them selves after stealing and acquiring our oil blocks to themselves.
