US condemns latest Boko Haram attacks

The United States of America has condemned the latest Boko Haram attacks in Borno State which resulted in the death of more than 40 people.

According to the US, the recent attacks are a reminder of the terrorist group’s capability to wreak major havoc.

In a statement issued in Washington by the US Department of State’s spokesman, John Kirby, the US called on the Federal Government to hold those responsible for the attacks accountable.

“We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families and friends of the victims of recent attacks in Borno State, attacks that resulted in more than 40 deaths. We condemn in the strongest terms the continued and widespread violence inflicted by Boko Haram on innocent men, women, and children in Nigeria. Those responsible must be held accountable.

“These latest attacks serve as a reminder that despite progress on the battlefield, Boko Haram remains capable of deadly and destabilizing acts of terrorism. We commend the efforts by the Nigerian military, as well as the militaries of Chad, Niger, and Cameroon for the gains they have made fighting Boko Haram,” Kirby stated.

The US, however, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to take further steps to secure and “govern liberated areas by filling in behind military successes with police and civilian administration.”

“The United States stands with Nigeria in the face of this threat. We will continue to take steps to increase our support for their efforts,” the statement added.

Last week, the US promised to work with President Buhari to stop the menace of the insurgents in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The US Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, during a telephone press briefing in South Africa last week, said that the American government was committed to ensuring that Nigeria wins its battle against the terrorist group.

Thomas-Greenfield added that the US was committing $5m to Nigeria’s efforts at defeating Boko Haram and that Nigeria had been receiving equipment and technical assistance from the US.

  1. Hypocrites! ISIL is defeating them on all fronts in the Middle East, and they think it is in Nigeria they would come and get glory. Chief hypocrite Obama admitted the US cannot defeat ISIL alone, so why does he think they can do it in Nigeria? When Jonathan needed their help they refused to give it. They refused to sell arms to Nigeria, and stopped Israel from selling to us, citing rubbish human rights abuse by the Nigerian military. When it was clear Nigeria was going to turn to their eternal enemies - Russia for assistance, they suddenly woke up and pledged support which they never gave till Jonathan stepped down. But they watched with dismay as the courageous Jonathan mustered regional support and dislodged the insurgents from their base, liberating many towns and villages. But what was US response to this? Nothing more than to use Amnesty International and accuse the Nigerian military of human rights abuses. Military spokesman, Chris Olukolade expressed dismay at US saying that whenever the Nigerian military was winning the war against Boko Haram, US would come up with allegations of human rights abuse against them, while keeping quiet whenever the terrorists gain grounds. The General wondered if US was not in fact part of Nigeria's problem, rather than a solution. Truth is, the US has nothing to offer us. Their fraternity with the country's new leadership is a ploy to coax Buhari to upturn Jonathan's law against gay relationship, which is their primary anger against Jonathan. Obama's recent invitation of Buhari to White House is nothing more than to see to that. The pledge to support our fight against insurgency is also nothing more than to that end. Buhari must be careful. Nigeria has grown beyond being a tool in the hands of so called world leaders. Robert Mugabe is the man that fits them. They know they cannot rubbish the man out of office even if he wishes to contest 100 times. It's okay to acknowledge their pledge to assist but not to lose focus on what is good for our dear nation.
