Kano Extends Monthly Sanitation To Sundays

The Kano State Government on Saturday announced the extension of its monthly environmental sanitation to Sunday.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ali Makoda, disclosed this to journalists on Saturday, shortly after monitoring exercise for the month of June.

Makoda said the population of Kano, in addition to the rainy season, made it necessary for the extension to enable people to properly clean their surroundings and drainage.

The commissioner commended the people of the state for their level of compliance during the exercise and implored them to continue with the attitude.

He, however, restated the new administration’s desire to ensure a cleaner and a healthier environment, adding that this would only be achieved with the support of the citizenry.

He said his ministry would liaise with some local government councils on how to improve sanitation in their areas.

The commissioner visited all the metropolitan Local Government Areas in Kano, including Ungogo Local government Area.

NAN reports that there was no arrest with regards to non- compliance to exercise for the month of June.

  1. Will the extension be saddled with enforcement of no movement during the period? If yes, what happens to the Christians that will have to attend church service. I hope this directive is not with ulterior motive.

  2. Why Sunday? Its supposed to be a day of rest for christians or are there no more christians in Kano?
A compromise would be on Friday after Jumat (since most dont go back to work).

  3. It is highly improper to restrict movement on sunday knowing fully well that it's a day for the worship of the christian God, it's a total disregard for the rights of the Christians in kano, it is totally unacceptable.

  10. I hope this is a rumour. You cannot infringe on people's right to worship which is a follow up to the right of religion and beliefs.
Kano is not a Muslim state but a predominantly Muslims state - that means people of other religious beliefs exist though in minority.
You simply cannot extend sanitation to Sunday instead start from Friday after Jumat.
Could this be an unreasonable excuse to muffle the Christians in Kano?
I hope to hear from the Governor's office stating clearly that the news is a mere rumour.
