I never said I’ll not contest second term, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said that he was quoted out of context in the statement he made on running only a single term.

The president said this when he had an interactive session with Islamic Clerics from South West region at the State House, Marina, Lagos.

“I need to clarifiy this otherwise I do not need to talk about it. This matter continues to come up.”
He said those who have been playing the tape where it was shown that he had pledged to run only a single term had not been sincere.

The President said that what happened was that late President Umaru Yar’Adua came out with political reforms when he, Jonathan was the Vice president.

Jonathan said that he was the chairman of the interparty group of the committee set up by late Yar’adua to agree on the president’s proposal for a single tenure.

He said the statement he made in Addis Ababa was within the context of the proposal.'

“I made that statement in Addis Ababa, when I addressed Nigerians. I made that statement after I had won elections.”

He said that he told the audience in Addis that that recommendation would move the country forward.

“I was advising Nigerians in Addis Ababa and I made mention of this issue of seven years of single tenure as being the best for the country.”

“I now added that if Nigerians will agree to run a single tenure of seven years I will not contest. That was the statement I made.”

He said that he still believed in that recommendation in order to prevent the waste of resources during re-election bids of incumbents.

Jonathan said the section of the broadcast which featured former president Obasanjo took place in 2011 during the PDP presidential primary.

He said that he did not want to join issues with Obasanjo because the party members were there for primaries and “I just wanted to win my primaries”.

He reaffirmed his earlier stand that if Nigerians accept his proposal of a single term of seven years, he would not re-contest.

“Those who are advertising on television that I said I was not going to contest a second tenure should play the whole tape.”

Jonathan said people were diminishing the office of the president because of politics.

He further said that even with the past campaign for the 2015 polls almost concluded, if Nigerians would accept that single tenure of seven years, he would not bother to contest the election.

He thanked the clerics for giving him the opportunity to clarify the statement and urged them to continue to pray for the unity and prosperity of the country,

Earlier the Chief Imam of Oriwu Central Mosque, Ikorodu,Llagos, Sheikh Oshoala Ajagbemokeferi, had urged the president to carry every Nigerian along in his administration.

The Imam pledged support for the programmes of the administration and urged the government to conduct a free, fair election to win the favour of God.

    2. He is confused. He doesnt realise that Allah n Jesus are on opposite sides. They don't agree. Allah says he has no son n his prophet is Muhammad. Jesus says he is the son of the living God n he sent him to preach love and bring peace to the world. Don't get them mixed up.

    3. I agree the person that post this thing is very confused. He is not following news report on how effort to revive electricity have being sabotaged by those that hate GEJ. I pity the writer because of his level of illiteracy. However this writer should show evidence why he/she thinks GEJ is a liar. Was he/she there when they were discussing it

  4. pls fellow Nigerians that say anything that comes out of their mouth against the President, have any of u taken time to play the whole tape like he said? U should also know that people clamoured for his second term bid and was even threatened by his kinsmen that he must contest. He is not a Saint that wouldn't lie at some point but u are also in the game of lies in ur own office...uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. u better pray for good governance than to insult such an exalted position. Be warned, God is watching ur utterances. wonder man Okey.

Am not saying that you not contest but at least be honest. Nigerians are not fools. Constant lying will always give people room to insult you Mr President.

  9. Mr President should know that those playing that part the tape for us would have played the whole tape but the other part does not have any relevance to the point they are trying to bring out. I trust Mr President will sooner than later tells us at a stage that the signatures of the PDP Governors that agreed to allow him run in 2011 on the condition that he will not run for 2nd term were forged. The salient point is that this administration is too weak and corrupt. Granted that there is no angel among us but there should be decorum. How can you explain a situation that allegation made against serving minister is swept under the rug without investigation?. This type of ineptitude should stop forthwith. However, with the pronouncement in one of his campaigns that he will not punish a corrupt person is enough to conclude that Mr President will continue to condone fraudulent tendency in his administration. Our economy will continue to nose-dive unabated, No! No!! No!!!, it is totally unacceptable.

    1. Mr. President did not say he will not punish a corrupt person. He said that the rule of law will have his way. If anyone is corrupt it needs to be proved in the court. Buying a new car, living a luxury life does not make someone corrupt. I do not know why some people are blind to understand the actual definition of corruption

  11. I am sorry to say here that president Jonathan is a pathological liar and a fool to constantly lie to us as if we are daft. I have watched a number of videos where he lied, in particular where he said his tenure would end by 2015. He even said that if he could not turn around the fortunes of Nigeria in 4 years then he cannot do it even if he's given another chance. The problem you are having with you is that you are a liar and incompetent. You don't set a good example for your followers as a president of Nigeria and that's why things are upside down. Now the Nigeria military are fighting Boko Haram and bombing Sambisa forest which they never did since 6 years ago because you want to win elections by all means. The almighty God is not a liar and I pray that God will only allow you win only if you are being sincere with Nigerians. If you like, go and rig and let people die. Or if you like stay put and allow military to take over, you will not go scot free. Nigeria and Nigerians are totally different now and I think you know this by yourself.

I hope you can see that you are the one destroying Nigeria by accusing me wrongly. Even Reuben Abati, his media adviser corroborated this. And when asked in the following video, he could not even say he's going to contest. Abati said, only Jonathan can comment on that. Follow the link below:

Recently the president said he would only talk for 17 minutes but he ended talking for more about 33 minutes. It shows to me that he does not know the difference between telling lies and truth. Also follow the link below:

  12. If Mr President could keep mute when OBJ made the statement for him that can paint your integrity in negative manner becos he didnt want to join issue him and want to win the primary election, how do u want us to believe that u are morally strong and not selling us off in order to win 2015 election? Leaders are expected to be firm in will, strong in character and competence in work. I m afraid sir you lack these attributes, I cant vote for you.

  15. No wonder Nigerians don't bother listening to his public National address to the Nation. He has no real stuff in him. A clueless leader and pathological liar. We all have seen the said videos and I can assure you, he wasn't misquoted. Ironically, we would wake up to listen to military tyrants when they want to address the nation but don't bother with Jonathan even when we manage to power our TV with generators. He is a desperate man and would lie, kill and bribe his way into 2nd term in office. A decade in government with this man would destroy the nation. They need more time even if it's a year extra to cover up 6years or more of theft perpetuated by the PDP and can't afford to be caught pants down.
