Ebola Outbreak: Death Toll Rises To 9,500 - WHO

The death toll for the current Ebola outbreak has risen to 9,500, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

More than 23,500 cases of the disease have also been reported in the three worst-hit countries; Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The UN health organization stated on Wednesday, February 25, that 99 new cases had been confirmed in the past week with Sierra Leone accounting for 63 of the infections.

"Cases continue to arise from unknown chains of transmission,"the WHO said adding that 16 of the new cases were discovered after post-mortem testing "indicating that a significant number of individuals are still either unable or reluctant to seek treatment."

Authorities in Sierra Leone recently conducted a door-to-door search for Ebola patients in the remote area of Porto Loko after a number of secret burials led to a rise in infections.
