Military Troops Fighting Boko Haram Inadequately Equipped - Babagana Kingibe

The former Nigerian Ambassador to Greece and Pakistan, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe has said the Nigerian Military cannot dispute the fact that troops fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast are not adequately equipped for the campaign.
Kingibe, who stated this while delivering a lead paper on “Understanding Nigeria’s National Interest” at the National Defense Policy Review Interactive Session in Kaduna yesterday, averred that there is no sign that the Boko Haram insurgency is as a result of any external aggression.

He added that the major concern at the moment was the growing suspicion and disharmony among Nigerians and the threats of destruction to the nation’s oil facilities.
These, he believes are internal threats. The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation harped on the need for the Nigerian military to carry out a serious self appraisal in order to be able to win the war on terror.
He said: “That our troops are not suitably or adequately equipped and motivated cannot be disputed. That there
is problem of indiscipline in the ranks is manifest, going by the incidence of mutiny and the spate of courts martial, desertions and dismissals reported by the military themselves.
“The last five years or so have been testing times for even our military. Their well merited reputation for professionalism and discipline through their gallant participation in numerous peacekeeping operations since independence has been put to test in their campaign against the insurgency ravaging the North East since 2009.

“Regrettably, well-meaning Nigerians who love Nigeria no less than the military have been reluctant to make
any legitimate comment about what they observe daily in the war zone because of the fear of being labelled unpatriotic and unsupportive of our troops”.

  1. Good observations dear Babagana Kingigbe. That is the whole truth, but when meaningful contributions are made by Nigerians towards addressing these facts that our military is not well equipped nor motivated, the ruling party and its beneficiaries will say it is a politically motivated campaign against the government of the day.

  3. What about the weapons seized from the military in Baga are those once not enough? Please don't lie to Nigerians. The Military are well equipped.
