Fashola condemns attacks on Jonathan’s convoy

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has condemned the attacks on President Goodluck Jonathan’s convoy in Bauchi State and other parts of the country, saying nobody has the right to attack the President.

Fashola spoke during an event to mark his 2,800 days in office on Tuesday, adding that the President had the right to campaign anywhere in the country.

The governor, who said such attacks must be condemned if the country was to move forward, also urged the President to dissociate himself from inflammatory and derogatory statements being made in his name.

He said such statements could spur attacks against him.

He said, “For example, the governor of Bauchi was reported as saying that those who attacked the president’s convoy were not the All Progressives Congress members, that they were members of the Peoples Democratic Party who were disgruntled about the gubernatorial tickets in their states.

“But nobody must attack the President; let me be clear on that. He has a right like anybody to move freely around especially at his campaign time, and this is not about violence the vote is really the choice that we need to make.”

Speaking about the peace accord signed by the presidential candidates, Fashola said the accord should be treated more than a mere gentleman agreement.

He added, “Like I said to people, it is not the agreement that people make that is as important as the honour with which they make them.”

Fashola also explained that his administration made remarkable impact in various sub-sectors to achieve a budget that closed at 83 per cent performance in 2014.

He said, “We completed the public lighting system on 11 kilometre-road network, between Ikorodu Road and Murtala Muhammed Way up to Oyingbo. The public lighting system will improve security at night, while affording the traders opportunity to trade far into the night and make more income.”
