Police arrest 25 students over cultism in Nasarawa


No fewer than 25 students of the Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, were arrested on Friday night by operatives of the Lafia Area Command of the police over allegation of being a cult members in the institution and its environs.


The students, among whom were four female students, reportedly could not sit their examinations on Saturday as they were not released until Saturday evening.

Investigationsalso revealed that the students were said to have gone to the school premises on Friday to read in preparation for their examination.

It was also gathered that the police, in their effort to curb incessant cult clashes in the institution and its environs, accosted the students, who were said to be returning from the school, where they had gone to prepare for their examination.

A source, who preferred anonymity, said, “During the recent communal crisis, especially in Shabu area of Lafia Local Government, police from this command did not make any arrest; so why are they arresting now that we are preparing for our examination. This arrest is a total violation of human rights.”

Confirming the arrest in a telephone interview, the Police Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa State Command, Ugochukwu Theodore, stated that the students were discharged the following day(Saturday) after a thorough questioning.
