Police I.G deserves to be jailed - Tambuwal

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to summon the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, to explain why he should not be jailed for disobeying the court’s order.

Tambuwal accused Abba of consistently disobeying the court order made on November 7, 2014, which directed parties in his substantive suit filed to stop his removal as a member and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The Speaker had on Thursday filed the fresh application before Justice Ahmed Mohammed, alleging that Abba’s instruction to the men of the police force to deny him access into the premises of the National Assembly preventing him from carrying out his lawful duties on November 20, amounted to flouting the court order.

He added that Abba, in further disrespect of the order, on November 26, appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs and told the members that he would not recognise him (Tambuwal) as the Speaker.

The grounds of Tambuwal’s application read in part, “On November 7, 2014, when this matter came up the 5th defendant (the Inspector General of Police) was represented in court by a learned senior counsel, Ade Okeaya-Inneh (SAN).

“The learned senior counsel for the 5th defendant informed the honourable court that the the fifth defendant was duly served with the originating summons in this suit.

“This honourable court thereafter ordered that party should maintain status quo pending on the determination of the substantive suit.

“Everybody except Suleiman Abba, Esq, who is the Inspector General of Police, has been obeying the order of this honourable court made on November 7, 2014.”

Tambuwal, through his lawyer, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who leads eight other Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and battery of other lawyers, is therefore seeking, “an order of this honourable court directing Suleiman Abba, Esq, (Inspector General of Police) – the 5th defendant in this suit – to appear in person and to show cause why he should not be committed to prison for contempt of order of this honourable court ordering maintenance of status quo on November 7, 2014 and/or for acting in manners and ways which showed disrespect to court.”

Justice Mohammed on Friday asked the plaintiff to convert the application which was filed as an ex parte motion to a motion on notice and serve same on Abba through his lawyer, Okeaya-Inneh.

The judge then adjourned till December 3 for the hearing of the application.

  3. The biggest shame to you Ojoma or whatever you call yourself. What is police business at the house of assembly? Pls, sentiments apart...let's call bad BAD and good GOOD not for the sake of today but tomorrow. Unless the court of law says otherwise, Hon. Tambuwal remains the Speaker of the honourable house of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is the true symbol of our democracy. For the police IG to invade the national assembly and also refuse to acknowledge Hon. Tambuwal as the Speaker, he needs to be fired with immediate alacrity. The IG should be asked who the Speaker of the honourable house of Representatives is then. Maybe he wants to assume that role. The IG is already seriously compromised and MUST does Leave to avoid any further threat to our democracy!

    1. You are a block head 1.08PM. Assuming you returned to your office and found it locked and with a police man stationed, what will you do? Beat the police and break the door? And that will mean taking laws into your hands. Majority win the vote, is a popular saying. Tambo is speaker on the strength of PDP majority. The law cannot touch every aspect of our lives including being a speaker after defecting to a minority! The honorable thing was for him to resign his speakership. The speaker and his friends know the honorable thing to do. But they are taking advantage of the hole in our constitution , saying does the const says a speaker can befrom the mminority? I am not a support er of PDP, but a concerned Nigerian. This was how the country was held in tormoil when yaradua was sick.Yaradua failed to write the national assembly that he was very sick. You know the story. Please be impartial.

  4. No wonder this country is backward...'cos of the mentality of some Nigerians. Anonymous 1:08 has said nothing but the fact and some blockheads are out to crucify him/her. Why can't you guys ask yourselves why the deputy speaker and some selected members(PDP members only) were allowed in while the Speaker and others were shut out. Where is the democracy in that? Only God knows what would have happened if the honourables had not taken the bold step to scale the fence. What would you do if you were locked outside the gate of your house while an evil is being perpetrated inside? Of course you would do anything possible to get inside, even if you have to pull down the walls. So I've since nothing wrong in the honourables scaling the fence to take their rightful seats and perform their legitimate duties. You jackass probably want the house polarized like we have in the governors forum till today. Please only people with common sense needs drop comments on this forum. Don't heat up the already hot polity with senseless comments.

  5. Anonymous 1:08pm it sad that people like you still support criminality and illegality just because your political sentiment and ignorance. Can law makers in England attempt to pull down the gate or climb over 10 Downing Street because British police refuse them entry? Can same also be said of lawmakers in US? But ignorant fools like you are even trying to glorify these shameless lawless lawmakers action. It is sad that some people and politicians think that by undermining all government organs or agencies is how to be in opposition and also short cut to attract sympathy and hang on to power illegally. This very people will definitely be haunted by their actions in future for it does not make sense for one to destroy a system one is working to inherit. It means they do not have the interest of the system and people there at heart.ci kena!
