Military begins battle to recapture Mubi from Boko Haram

The military authorities have commenced a major offensive designed to recapture lost territories to the fighters of Boko Haram Islamic sect.

Investigations revealed that the military operation started on Sunday evening with massive deployment of troops to the operational areas in Adamawa State, especially the Mararaba, Madagali and Mubi axis, where the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents had been prominent.

A source, who confided in our correspondent, said that the troops who were strategically deployed to lock down the city now said to be under siege, were advancing.

It was gathered that the comprehensive operation, led by the troops of the Nigerian Army, also involved the anti-riot policemen deployed from Yola, Benin and Makurdi and members of the local vigilante in the area.

The source said that the operation would characterise infantry action by the ground troops, the use of teargas by the police and the members of the local vigilante reputed to have a fair knowledge of the area.

It was further stated that the communication within Mubi and other areas under occupation by the Boko Haram had become quite difficult as the insurgents had cut off all the GSM masts in the commercial city and its environs.

It was stated that the even though the insurgents had not pulled down or destroyed any of the masts; they had cut energy supply to them.

The source said, “The operation started last night. It is tagged, ‘Operation no Mercy.’ By now, the soldiers should be in Mararaba and Mubi, because there is no service; the service has been cut off.

“Two days before the commencement of this operation on Saturday, many people fled the area in order not to get caught in the crossfire. Since Sunday, everybody ran out of the place as soldiers encircled the whole place.

“Many of the Boko Haram boys are people from the town. Many of the boys can be identified. So, the local vigilantes are also entering together with the military.

“The Air Force surveyed the place, but they left the ground troops to do their jobs.

“The network inside Mubi is down. They cut the network, put off the generator but the masts are not destroyed.

“Mobile policemen are also involved in the fight; some of them were drawn from Mopol 14 in Yola. Some came from Makurdi and Benin. The Mopol are expected to be using teargas…,” the source explained.

  1. I am confused.
Who will the mobile police be using tears gas on? Armed insurgents or the civilian populace?

  4. As long as the Nigerian military continues to play catch-up with Boko Haram (BH), there can be no victory. We are not impressed with these efforts of the military trying to recover territories from BH. The military ought to be chasing BH wherever they are so they would have no place to stand. Where was the military when BH overran these places?
