FG to buy cooking stoves with N9.2 Billion

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the purchase of N9.2billion worth of clean cook stoves and wonder bags for rural women under the National Clean Cooking Scheme.

Wonder bag is a non-electric slow cooker invented by Sarah Collins, ‎a south African eco-entreprenuer, who came up with the idea six years ago during a power cut, when she decided to keep her dinner cooking by surrounding the pan with cushions.

The council also awarded a contract of N60.9billion to an indigenous firm, KaKatar CE Limited, for the provision of engineering infrastructure for Kyami District, Zone C, Abuja.

Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nurudeen Muhammed; Minister of Environment, Mrs. Lawrecia Mallam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Muhammed, briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

Muhammed said the N9.2billion inclusive of Value Added Tax was approved for the procurement of 750,000 units of clean cook stove and 18,000 wonder bags.

He said the stoves are expected to be delivered by Messrs Integra Renewable Energy Services Limited within a period of 12 weeks.

He noted that the stoves which will be assembled locally, will provide jobs to Nigerians among other benefits.

The minister said, “The National Clean Cooking Scheme is an aggressive drive to engender clean cooking culture amongst the poor rural women, to reduce and possibly eliminate cooking with solid fossil which is detrimental to health.

“The scheme is expected to provide 20 million clean stoves over a five-year period at the rate of four million stoves yearly which will be distributed without charge.

“It will also reduce incessant felling of trees which exposes the country to ecological problems.

  8. Can the rural/urban women afford the cost of Kerosene? Or is this a special made that will be powered by air or water? Many women threw away their stoves because they cant afford Kerosene cost. So address cost of fuel rather than stove procurement in the first instance. A litre of Kero goes for N150 or more in some places. Pls help us.

  9. Address Kerosene price issue first. Many women have done away with their stoves because they couldn't fuel it. How many can afford N150 or more per Ltr of Kerosene? However, lest I pre-empt you, may be the so called stoves on the way will be powered by water or air or 'PVC' who knows, anything can happen. It is all election gimmick. why now?

  13. If FG give out cooking stove to rural women, can these rural women afford the price of kerosene? They will later sell it to buy food and firewood

  14. Here we go again!!!, while I really so not like criticising Dr.GEJ govt, it because mind blowing to read on government's focus at this time. One would think a government run by a PhD holder will be prudent, discrete and reasonable. If we had to start an Eco-friendly stove producing company, will we ever spend 9.2BN? We have all kind of experts and innovator all around the world who are of the Nigerian origin. This project cannot be better than one of the Msc student expect I have seen Nigerians produce here in England. Dr.GEJ, you have so many people around you who portray you in the conclusion of OBJ summary of your govt being evil , pirochial and wasteful. A vote against GEJ is a vote for the roster it if Nigeria, for the sanity of our system for the revival of hope that has being stylishly dying. I today withdraw my support in every way from GEJ, your administration is a bad product to market while your person remains a good man.

  15. Oh God, give us a reliable leader that will clean up the mess in this country. Spending N9.2billion to buy cook stoves and wonder bags is another avenue to steal what remains in our Federation Account before these looters are flush out of power.

Let these devils know that Nigerians are not fools, but they themselves are the fools and looters. What are our Colleges of Technology doing? We are talking of unemployment in the country and some thieves met and cooked stupid ideas. Was this how Japan and China handled their economies?

    History will judge you all.

  16. This guy called Jonadaft is such a huge mess. Kerosene goes for N250, will they power the stove with water. Clueless wasteful spending. Why not spend that on education. Free education for all. Kilode sef, are all your advisers sick?

  17. The style in this forum is that the pro-GEJ Government commentators will keep mum when issue like this blew open. Their quietness depicts someone suffering from intellectual down syndrome. I will be unfair to blame them all through but for the standard of education they received. How on earth can anyone think of importing kerosene stove for such amount? I am confident that this deceit shall stop one day.

  18. Govt is not buying kerosene stove but gas stove.
