3,433 fresh lawyers called into the Nigerian bar



The Nigerian Law School on Tuesday released 3,433 fresh lawyers into the Nigerian bar.

Among those who were called to bar at the event held at the campus of the school in Abuja were the grandson of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adedamilotun; daughter of Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, Bibitayo; and former President, National Association of Nigeria Students, Ini Ememobong.



Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Olanrewaju Onadeko, said four of the successful candidates graduated with first class, 96 with Second Class (Upper Division), 620 with Second Class (Lower Dvision) while 2, 697 obtained pass.

He urged the new wigs to adhere to the norms and ethics of the profession.

He explained that the country had been known to produce eminent international jurists, scholars and legal experts.

Against the backdrop of the unabated insurgents’ activities in some parts of the country, Onadeko said institution had taken adequate measures to safeguard its campuses in Kano and Yola.

This, he said, the school did by installing high perimeter walls with security barbed wire.

He added that arrangements had been concluded for the installation of CCTV cameras in all campuses of the school in view of the daunting challenge of insecurity in the country.

The Chairman, Body of Benchers, Chief T. J O Okpoko (SAN), equally urged the new lawyers to adhere to the rules of professional ethics regulating the conduct of lawyers and law business.

He said, “It is obligatory that the new wigs and members of the profession, by their action or inaction, enhance the honour of the law profession and the dignity of its members by their words and action, whether in public or private life.”
