Nigerian troops capture top Boko Haram commander in Borno


The Defence Headquarters has said troops involved in a gun battle with Boko Haram insurgents have captured an injured high ranking commander of the sect.


The military stated this in its official twitter handle on Thursday that the Boko Haram commander was being given medical treatment in an unnamed military facility.

“A seriously wounded high ranking terrorist leader is being treated in a military medical facility after he was captured in operation,” the tweet read.

The Defence headquarters had stated last night in another of its tweet, that the troops were battling the insurgents in another gun battle as they regrouped to launch another attack to recapture the strategic town.

“Konduga under attack again. Troops currently engaging another large number of heavily armed terrorists trying to enter the town,” the tweet read.

Also, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Olajide Laleye, said in an electronic mail on Thursday a total of 60 insurgents were killed in the latest battle for the control of Konduga between 4pm and 8pm on Wednesday.

He said the troops did not suffer any casualty in the operation stressing that troops morale remained very high.

He said, “In continuation of ongoing operation to dislodge Boko Haram terrorists from the North East, gallant troops of the Nigerian Army conducted offensive operations between 4pm and 8pm yesterday (17 September 2014), in Konduga area of Borno State, killing over 60 Boko Haram terrorists.

“Military hardware recovered from the insurgents include 13 AK 47 rifles, five Rocket Propelled Gun tubes, two General Purpose Machine Guns, one Anti-Aircraft Gun and two Ford Ranger pick-up vehicles.

“Nigerian Army troops did not suffer any casualty. Morale of troops remains very high. Further details will be communicated accordingly.”
