BOKO HARAM: FG turns to Russia, China as USA, UK fail Nigeria

The emerging scenario in the fight against terror and the steps Nigeria’s government has taken would have resulted in global sensation during the cold war. The United States would fight to keep their allies.

They would never easily lose any of their allies to then Soviet Union as now represented by Russia which has, although, embraced free market economy.

Nigeria, for years, enjoyed close ties with the West and was seen as a US ally. But the seeming snub or nonchalant attitude towards it by its traditional allies has reportedly compelled Nigeria to turn to Russia and China for the training of its military as well as acquisition of military hardware to fight Boko Haram insurgents.

Highly placed military and intelligence sources in Abuja told newsmen that the decision to turn to the other two world military powers was an interim measure to roll back the military advances made by the Boko Haram insurgents who have gained some grounds in seizing and controlling some towns and Villages in the north eastern states of Borno and Adamawa.

Already, Nigerian security personnel from the Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS) have been dispatched to Russia for training as Special Forces to combat the Boko Haram insurgents who are mounting stiff challenge to the Nigerian security services.

According to investigations, following the increasing sophistication of the Boko Haram terrorists, the Nigerian government approached American and British governments to procure arms for its armed forces in order to effectively counter the insurgents but the two western governments have continued to dither, a situation that may have been responsible for some of the gains recorded by terrorists in recent times.

A senior security Source revealed that: “the United States and Britain appear unwilling to provide arms to our armed forces. It is surprising because these are two friendly countries to Nigeria which is under threat from terrorists. We have no option but to look somewhere else for our needs pending when the issues are resolved at the diplomatic level by our government.”

This remark underscored the current lukewarm attitude of both countries to the Federal Government. The USA had said that it would not assist Nigeria with land forces and would not also share intelligence with the Nigerian military. Sources said that they did not trust the Nigerian military which was accused of lacking professionalism and which also had moles within. But Nigeria expected better assistance from USA, Britain and the like. But their support has fallen below expectation.

It was also gathered that one of the options was to turn to Russia which has always been willing to supply weapons and some other logistics to Nigeria when other western countries are not forthcoming. The Nigeria Air force has several Russian fighter jets in its fleet.

It was gathered that Nigeria has entered into contract with Russian Arms manufacturers for the supply of high calibre weapons to the Nigerian Army to combat the insurgents in the North east and has begun discussion with the Israeli government on possible supply of military hardware.

“When the Chief of Army staff said recently that the Nigerian army would soon take possession of weapons that would reverse the trend in the North east, he was referring to the deal between Nigeria and some Russian arms manufacturers. We are also in discussion with Israeli companies. We don’t want to be held ransom by our traditional allies. That is why we are expanding our sources of supply,” the source said.

As part of the agreement between Nigeria and Russia, a group of Nigerian security personnel are already in Eastern Europe for training as Special Forces with another batch, made up of the Army, Police and DSS billed to leave Nigeria next month to join the other three batches that are already in training.

President Jonathan recently, at the passing out parade of cadets at the Nigerian Defence Academy, said the armed forces would set up a Special Forces Brigade to combat terrorism in the country.

  1. Let us not blame the US. Truth is that the entire security apparatus is corrupt. There is no truth and sincerity of purpose. The same will be the outcome. Goodluck never showed any seriousness in wanting to end this war. GEJ and PDP were busy looking for avenues to score cheap mark by politicising the BH issue. So does it suffice to say that it was APC that went behind and asked the American and British government not to come to Nigeria's aid. PDP keep passing the ball. When the government is ready to fight BH, everyone including the US and the UK government will know. The government was busy telling lies to itself and yet you want others to come to your rescue. Useless government. To hell with all of you.

  2. Definitely, the weapons used by the insurgents originated from USA and Britain. These weapons will not be given to a legitimate government but to outlaws because they want to see the nation destroyed in 2014 as some of them have predicted. It will pay Nigeria better to befriend those who desire our friendship and not those who endure us. These western nations have never hesitated to treat us with disdain and are only interested in what they can get from us. I recall they also refused to give us zmapp to treat the Ebola patients but were willing to send same to Liberia. Meanwhile, the Ebola infection came from an American/Liberian citizen. Thank God, heaven came to our aid as Nigeria defeated Ebola in record time. Thank God

  3. The US and her slave - UK, can never assist Nigeria unless she embraces gay marriage and gives them oil concessions. Wherever they enter turns to Iraq, libya, Afghanistan, syria, yemen or somalia. Nigeria should turn completely to china and russia who dont abandon tbeir friends.

  4. Nigeria should nationalize their companies that are controlled by USA and UK, they only criticize the Nigerian Government without helping them.

  11. I thought we are giant of Africa. Giant of Africa cannot defeat Boko Haram. You are turning to the west to help you. We will see what Russia and China will do for you. You can not defend your citizens and your territory and you still claims to be a sovereign nation and Giant for that matter. You are now admitting indirectly that you don't have what it takes to defend your territory.

  13. Having Gone through all the comments above it surprises me that we Nigerians critize more rather than to look for ways to find a final lasting solutions to our Problems. 1. USA and UK will not say they don't know about d BH. 2. USA want Nigeria to be divided. The agneda for Nigeria division is to demoralize the National Forces. Don't you know how many peace keeping the Nigerian Army has done in Africa, Seria lone Sudan with the UN and AU. If the National Forces are like grasshoppers and not gaints they won't have been able to maintain peace in the war region. Let me point this clearly to us know who your friends are and who your enimies are. Our weapon hardwares are outdated. I compare the gear of Nigeria army in Dafur in 2012 to Armerican Army in Afghan in 2003 there seems to be a wide gap. You can fight an enemy who is ready to die. Our National Forces needs the latest equipments and gadgets to fight the insurgency. GEJ or not PDP or Not APC or not we are all Nigerians and it is in our best interest to read between The line and understand what it means to combat terrorism. Ebola was an experiment on africa. Abudlmutallab was a UK/Nigerians citizen but when he had a terror plan he bacame a nigerians straight.

  14. Who told you that our weapons are outdated, did you inspect them. We can go to peace keeping to other African countries but we can not go to peace keeping in our country. You are talking about America and UK and hoping on them while you are a sovereign nation. Nigeria is useless

    1. I am very sure you don't know what outdated weapon means then you should check though the inventory of the National forces and see they type of weapons in use also check out their Battle tanks. Do you know why GEJ was trying to apply for $1 billion loan to equip the army? Do you know that the DSS are even more equiped than the Army? So when you want to write, confirm what you are about to say before writing. AK47 is the second world war weapon. I think u should understand what outdated means in my contest. A better weapon with scope. Much power and accuracy, Higher Calibre, Night Vision, Real time relay to Command Post. Air support
