Abike Dabiri-Erewa faults sacking of 16,000 resident doctors

A member of the House of Representative, Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Lagos, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has faulted the Federal Government’s sacking of 16,000 resident doctors in the country.

The lawmaker, who is also the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs, added that the indefinite suspension of residency programme posed a threat “to the development of the country’s ailing healthcare sector.”

The lawmaker said this in a statement on Sunday, insisting that the sack was “questionable on several fronts.”

She said, “The Federal Government may have disagreement with the striking doctors, but opting to sack all resident doctors given the present predicament is unjustifiable, insensitive and inconsiderate.

“The resident doctors are the younger generation of doctors who are constantly understudying their superiors with a hope to replacing some of our renowned consultants in later years.

“The sacking suggests that the government does not care about the doctors. This same message, delivered in several other ways, has made many of our doctors to continue to relocate to western countries.”

Dabiri-Erewa urged President Goodluck Jonathan to rescind the decision in the interest of Nigerians.

She appealed to resident doctors and the Nigerian Medical Association to be reasonable in their demands and opt for dialogue to make peace.

    1. Don't mind Abike
They speak with double intention If the ruling govt that sacked these Dictors was her party it will be justified
The Doctors should go and negotiate instead of calling for the removal of their minister
