Buhari’s death would have spelt doom for Nigeria - Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday admitted that Nigeria would have erupted in turmoil if a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, had died during separate attacks on them in Kaduna on Wednesday.

He said Nigerians would not have celebrated the Eid-el-Fitri because a major calamity would have befallen the country with their deaths.

Jonathan spoke when Vice President Namadi Sambo led members of the Muslim community in the Federal Capital Territory to pay the traditional sallah homage on him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President described those who were responsible for the attacks as sons of the devil because of the magnitude of the calamity they would have attracted to the country.

He said, "Not too long ago, we had these dastardly attacks in  Kano and Kaduna.

"We stand to condemn these acts of terror on our people and we extend our condolence and sympathy to the bereaved and those who might have been injured.

"Look at the recent attacks in Kaduna especially where‎ Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a target and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was also a target. You can imagine if these two people had died in those attacks.

"Sheikh Bauchi is one of our top Islamic preachers, he has millions of followers, Buhari, former Head of State and a leading political figure has massive supporters.

"On the same day, people wanted to kill them‎. Those who planned the attacks are clearly sons of the devil because if they had killed these two people, we wouldn't have been heretoday.

"This country would have been in turmoil, we couldn't have gathered here to celebrate. We thank Allah for saving their lives and preventing a major calamity that would have befallen our country."

The President also pleaded with clerics across the country to shun the gospel of hate.

He said it was important for them to preach messages of peace and unity.

He insisted that the country could not be developed in an atmosphere devoid of peace.

  1. Shame unto you GLJ the innocent people bokoharam has been killing. Is Buhari`s life more important and special than all the lives wasted by the boko haram. The earlier we begin to tell ourselves the truth the better for all of us. All the Muslims in northern Nigeria whether they like it or not know who the boko haram members are and have the responsibility to expose them and not the Federal Government of Nigeria. If they have conscience, they should redeem their image. This is not the first time Muslims in Nigeria are causing us international embarrassment. Enough is Enough.

  4. My dear president,
One thing I must commend u is ur efforts to pull things together but in this attempt your words fall apart. Does it mean that with all these killings going on we are yet to be in turmoil? Does it mean that all lives that are lost were not important?is it okay then to infer that nothing is been done in this case because the people that have died are not important and top leaders who have massive followers? Can we safely state that what will turn u on to act appropriately is when there is a war because of the death of those u deem important sir. I must tell u, we gave up the security of our lives and property for u as the president,we believed in you that is why we voted even at a time when all hope we thought was lost, after all this mr president the lives of the ordinary citizen does not count any more!I know God has a way out of all this and He will come through very shortly, u will account for what he entrusted into your hands.

  8. Anon 7:32, u talking like that bcos u don't know d run responsibilities of a President. DAT position of Mr President is for someone who is cable any how. the welfare of Nigerians are in his hands and every authority and power(within Nigeria) is given to him. Do u think if something like these happened in a civilized country, the citizens will blame d military? No. nothing is wrong with d military, something is wrong with d government... GEJ must fix it
