President Jonathan mocked in Kano: Governor, others sweep the ground the president stepped on during his stay

Shortly after President Goodluck Jonathan left Kano State after a party rally, the governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso led his state officials to sweep the ground the president stepped on during his stay.

The governor posted the picture on his Facebook wall.

Mr. Kwankwaso and his team jeered at the president as they swept the grounds with brooms. Broom is the main symbol of Nigeria’s largest opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, APC. Mr. Kwakwanso is a member of the APC.

The governor’s actions on Tuesday are seen as a cultural hyperbole meant to emphasise his disdain for the president.

In the Hausa culture, when a broom is used to sweep off the departure of a guest, it is the highest expression of disdain for the visitor, Kabiru Mohammed, a Hausa linguist, said.

Political analysts say the governor’s broom-sweep-off connotes the rivalry between Nigeria’s ruling People’s Democratic Party and the APC. It is also seen as a comical reaction to the president’s scathing remarks on Mr. Kwankwaso during the visit where he accused the governor of maladministration.

Mr. Jonathan, at the Tuesday rally, said the Kano government under Mr. Kwankwaso has received over N255 billion as local government funds since 2011. He asked the 44 council chairmen in Kano to challenge the governor on what he has done with the funds.

Both Messrs Jonathan and Kwankwaso were political allies until late last year when the Kano governor joined the opposition. Mr. Kwankwaso recently voiced his regrets for supporting the president in 2011.
While Mr. Jonathan was still in Kano for the visit, Mr. Kwankwaso tweeted that President could as well use his visit to explain the missing $20 billion leaked by the now suspended Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi.

The president’s office is expected to react to the broom mockery.

    1. You guys should put on your thinking cap. In a sane society the president will still be in mourning state after what happened on Monday. If he is serious about governance at all he should be presidpresiding over one security meeting or the other seeking solutions to the obvious problems caused by this notorious Bokoharam bastard that has no regard for human life. It's not the best of times for my beloved nation. The president and the governor are so insensitive to be engaging in war of words when the nation is bleeding.

  10. ...so this is an example of a progressive?. No wonder all of them in APC behave and speak irresponsibly, uncultured and dis-honourably. From Buhari to Lai mohammed, from Tinubu to Amaechi, from El- rufai to Fani- kayode, the list is endless. How can an elected Governor, who subscribed to an oath of office and allegiance to the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria dis respect the very symbol of the highest office of the land just in the name of opposition?. This is highly condemnable!. with this the APC has lost all the sympathy of well thinking and cultured Nigerians. Tu fia kwa!!!

  32. KWANKWASO THIS, KWANKWASO THAT. BUT YOU GUYS SHOULD REASON BEYOND SENTIMENTS. WHEN A ELDER INSULTS HIMSELF, THE MUCH YOUNGER ONE HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO ASSIST HIM TO DO THE INSULT MORE. OUR PRESIDENT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REASONABLE ENOUGH TO DO AN IDEOLOGY CAMPAIGN, RATHER THAN CALLING THE GOVERNOR A THIEF. RESPECT IS RECIPROCAL. APC IS A PARTY, THE GOVERNOR IS A PERSON. LETS SHARE THE BLAME AROUND. OGA GEJ FALL OUR HAND. I AM NOT FOR ANY PARTY OR TRIBE, I AM ONLY FOR A GREAT, PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS NIGERIA.

  33. The truth about the matter is that there is nothing like Nigeria. That terminology is a hoax and until we all realize it, the issues we witnessed, such as the kwankwanso saga will continue to play out. The north hates the south SIMPLE. And this hatred did not start today, it existed even in the 1950's, 1960's, etc.
The northerners have always hated we southerners and at every given opportunity, have shown this hatred openly by slaughtering southerners in the north like chicken, whether a northerner is the President of Nigeria or not; so i am not surprised by kwankwanso's open hatred for Jonathan. My grouse with Jonathan as a southerner, is that i had expected him to sit down with all southerners, even if it is with the southern elders and decide on how to separate this country into 2. Believe me when i say the time has come for the north and the south to go our separate ways. We have had a 100 years of mutual hatred for each other so why go on? They did it in Sudan. Simply divide this country into 2. Let the south come together and decide on how to move forward together. We can make Asaba our Capital since it is central and rotate the Presidency every 4 years between south west, south east and south south. With prayers i believe we will succeed. Can we try this PLEASE SOUTHERNERS? Let the north go away with their blood-lettings please!!!!!

  35. It is high time we kept sentiments aside, so that we can see clearly the problems we face as a nation. On Monday 14 April 2014, more than 70 innocent lives were lost, with 3 times that number lying critically injured. The next day being Tuesday, more than 100 school girls were abducted by boko haram. As the father of the entire nation, you have clearly shown the value you place on the lives of your citizens. Are they just statistics or a vote you require to win elections? This is absolutely not the time to engage in political campaigns or dancing around in public. Haha now the blood mixed with tears that flow everyday not touch your hearts. And to APC hmmmm. If this is the kind of opposition we have in Nigeria who can not think beyond only winning 2015 election by all means, then we are doomed. The one in power is a sorry story and the jostling for power is a far cry. Where do we face for better leadership.
