ABUJA BLAST: Tambuwal, Saraki, others donate blood

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, on Tuesday donated blood to victims of Monday’s bomb attack, which claimed over 89 lives in Nyanya, an Abuja satellite area in the Federal Capital Territory.

Other Nigerians, including a former governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki, also heeded NEMA pleas for help as they donated blood to the victims.

Tambuwal also urged other Nigerians to donate blood to the victims as a humanitarian gesture of saving lives.

At least 124 survivors are being hospitalised with varying degrees of burns and wounds.

Tambuwal spoke as he visited some of the victims in hospitals to commiserate with them.

He had visited survivors in hospitals, including Nyanya General Hospital and the National Hospital.

The Speaker made the donation shortly after he promised to go to the National Blood Transfusion Centre to donate blood.

Tambuwal had said, “I will go to the National Blood Transfusion Centre and donate some blood for the victims.

“I call on well-meaning Nigerians, who have the capacity to donate blood to please come out and donate blood and whatever is required for the survival of the victims.”

The Speaker added that he was motivated by the “human feeling” in him to donate his blood.

His Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Imam Imam, confirmed at 3.43pm that the Speaker had donated the blood.

“He has just donated the blood at the blood transfusion centre,” Imam said.

Tambuwal expressed concern that the issue of insecurity was being politicised by Nigeria in spite of the many lives and property being lost frequently.

The Speaker called on leaders at all levels of government to tackle insecurity seriously.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has revealed that Nigerians are still trooping out to donate blood.

According to him. the response has been overwhelming adding that “even the British High Commissioner and members of the British High Commission” were among those who donated blood.

He said, “I must thank Nigerians for that attitude because it was just an appeal through the radio and people started coming. I have just been told.”
