National Conference: FG rejects delegates’ request for aides’ allowance

The Federal Government has rebuffed request by some of the delegates to the ongoing national conference that their personal aides be paid by the government.

Each of the delegates are to receive N12m for the three months exercise.

The allowance include money for accommodation, transportation, part of feeding (the delegates are to have free lunch at the venue of the conference.

However, the delegates are expected to have aides such as drivers and personal assistants in order to ease their works and movements.

However, investigations by one of our correspondents showed that some of the delegates met in Abuja on Monday shortly after the inauguration of the conference by President Goodluck Jonathan where the welfare of their aides was discussed.

The delegates, it was gathered, wanted the Federal Government to take over the allowances of their aides.

While some of them at the informal meeting said that the issue be raised during plenary, thinking that the N12m was meant for them and not their aides, a few of them were said to have disagreed.

One of the delegates, who was at the meeting, confided in our correspondent that the organisers of the conference ought to inform them about the number of aides they were to employ and who would be responsible for their salaries.

Another delegate was said to have given an example of the members of the National Assembly whose aides he said, were being paid by the Federal Government.

“This does not affect the salaries and allowances of these lawmakers,” one of the delegates argued.

At the inaugural sitting on Tuesday, a delegate from Jigawa State, Senator Mohammed Jibrin, asked the leadership of the conference to tell the delegates the number of aides each of them were expected to have.

“We need to know the number of aides we are to employ,” he demanded.

Another delegate, a lady also asked the management of the conference who was going to be responsible for the welfare of their aides.

In her response, the Conference Secretary, Mrs. Valeria Azinge, said there was no provision for personal aides of the delegates.

She informed the delegates that the Federal Government had monetised their accommodation, transportation and sitting allowances.

“You will all receive your pay slips in two weeks intervals and we won’t disclose what is paid to you in the open. Each and every one of you is however free to divulge it, but that will not come from us,” Azinge said.

  1. Wolves in sheep clothes...who's interest are they protecting, personal aids or Nigerians? Imagine 12m to be allocated for personal aids at the expense of the common man. This explains the personal vendetta of the so-called delegates and not for the interest of Nigerians. Hmmm...vultures at the backyard.

To NASS members who have allowances for their aides...is that what they went there to discuss...hw many of these old fools can boast of N4million monthly turnover. in their private businesses...unless they are alrdy politicians??...it just goes frm bad to worse in this country...jona has concocted a way to rubbish senior citizens of this country who speak against his govt n these elders aren't wise enuff to see d writing on d wall...my GOD...who cares abt ur aides??...they've alrdy compromised their conscience..integrity n morality by accepting to attend such a fiasco in d first place n accepting d decorated bribe being given to them...everybody who's being to dat conference has no moral grounds to disparage jona's govt in anyway...cos dat person is alrdy a part of d problem...this is so disheartening...allowances for their aides!!!

  5. Waste of resources, time a means and a way to divert attentions and also to “STEAL“ more money. A real and a clear display of “INCOMPETENCE,LACK OF VISION AND WISDOM“, infact, only a “FOOLISH AND UNSERIOUS“ leader can organise such a “USELESS AND UNPRODUCTIVE“ gathering in the name of national conference just to waste our resources in favor of some “UNREASONABLE“ people just to disscuss some “UNMEANINGFUL“ issues at a very difficult time and situations like this . It‘s really a pity or rather unfortunate to have such a “MUGU“ as a leader. WHAT A SHAME!

  8. Who called this a National Conference of Idiots? You are perfectly correct, because that's exactly what this is, a total waste of the nation's time and resource. You are paying them for accomodation but most of these people will be squatting in somebody's parlor and showing up the next day without taking a bath. Hopefully someone will deploy a hidden microphone, just to show how much snoring will be going on in the conference hall after an overnight of palmwine drinking. Afterall they are being handed N4m each month for doing nothing, typical of the Nigerian way. Britain should never have given us independence for we know not what we are doing.

  9. See our so-called representatives.... Full of greed, irrational thinking and corrupt minds at the wide expense of average Nigerians.... With all honesty and sincerity, nothing, I repeat, nothing good will come out of the whole exercise.
