YOBE COLLEGE MASSACRE: Surviving victims recount ordeal

The United Nations on Wednesday joined prominent Nigerians and groups in condemning the gruesome killing of schoolchildren in the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe State by Boko Haram insurgents.

Also, some surviving victims of the attack recounted their ordeal on Wednesday.

Aliyu Ayuba, a JSS 3 student, fled the scene with a bullet in his back. He said the assailants; young men and boys in military uniforms and plain clothes, ordered the students to gather in one place and started shooting sporadically. Aliyu added that all his roommates were killed and burnt inside the hostel.
Another survivor said, “I was shot in my left leg, while I was sleeping. When I woke up, I could not walk and was later taken to the girls’ hostel where the insurgents gathered us with the female students. They selected some of the female students and went away with them, while they left some of us groaning in pain from gunshots.”

A teacher, Mallam Samaila Idris, narrated how the attackers drove into the school premises in nine Hilux vans at around midnight on Monday; their bloody operation lasted for over five hours.

He said that those who stayed at the school thought the assailants were military personnel, until the shooting started. Idris added that those in the staff quarters fled before the terrorists started the fire.

Before the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association, the Arewa Consultative Forum, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, the Northern Elders Forum, the President of the Senate, David Mark, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, and the Prelate, Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Chukwuemeka Uche, reacted, a state hospital official said the death toll had risen from 43 to 59.

“Fresh bodies have been brought in. More bodies were discovered in the bush after the students who had escaped with bullet wounds died from their injuries,” Bala Ajiya of the Damaturu Specialist Hospital said late on Wednesday.

Ajiya added that the school’s 24 buildings, including staff quarters, were completely burned to the ground by the attackers during the onslaught.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Defence and Army had passed a resolution directing the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, to relocate his office to Borno State in order to effectively monitor the war against the insurgents in the North –East.

  1. This is nonsence, imagine five hours and nothing was done, the military could not do anything, even the police. They should be sacked abeg.

  6. I smell a rat here. Northern rulers over to you. This nothern hunger for power in Abuja sef. what have they done with it for 38 yrs? Nothing! So why are they willing to spill the blood of the own youth or keep quiet from pointing out the culprit leaders just to make nigeria ungovernable for getting into power again? The masses of the north are the poorest even during norther rule and I really mean rule. So clearly this fight for abuja is not for the masses of the north but for their fulani elites again to make their masses more poor and ignorant while they send their elite children abroad to study in the best western education schools and continue their born to rule ignorance and set the nation backwards again and yet massage their ego and bank balance. To be brutally honest in terms of development GJ is the best president that the north have ever had. He goes so far out of his way to develop them with his own peoples niger delta oil money while the north moan and complain but produce little to the wealth of this nation despite all the mineral and agricultural wealth they have potencially. Northern masses WAKE UP!! And free yourselves from these elites that are sucking your blood like parasites. Remove these feudal elites that rule over you and are trying to rule over nigeria again. We are wiser now.

  13. @ Abdulhamid Aminu Saleh, if they are so brave, well armed and motivated, why do they skulk around like hyenas killing innocent children and defenceless people in their sleep? Or once in a while attacking a few isolated police and military units and running away like the cowards they are? Why don't they stand and fight and achieve their aim of forcing a country of over 170 million people to join their cult of blood sucking demon? Let the governor go and fight them since he knows so much about their structure.

They have clearly stated their affiliation and qouted scriptures to support their act but you and your kind still bury your head in the sand and feign ignorance. People like you are part of the problem.

PAY-BACK IS NOW AND NOT TOMORROW FOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVE HAND(S) IN THE MASSACRE/KILLING OF THESE INNOCENT CHILDREN. THE BLOOD OF THE CHILDREN WILL SEEK YOU ALL OUT ONE BY ONE.

  19. I am indeed very sorry that president Jonathan is not competent and cannot be taken serious. Is this part of goodluck he's claming. He declared a state of emergency, yet this is happening. To me it shows he's not respected at all. How come the heads of army etc. are still in charge. The people of this region are scary. I don't even understand their mission. If they do not want Jonathan to remain president, why are they killing themselves? If western education is sin, is this the way to register their protest?Sincerely, I am struggling to understand them quite well. This is extremely a sad moment for Nigeria.

  20. There is no solution in sight. Unfortunately that's the truth. Nothing can be done to stop book haram because each time they carry out and get away with this attacks, they become bolder and audacious. Not with attempts of Mr president requesting to dialogue with them and granting them amnesty.
Sorry guys but the truth is bitter, book haram is here to stay until someone with balls decides to tackle them blood for blood and eye for an eye just as the Americans would have done.
Someone who can take the fight to them is needed and not a cowering and condescending figure like GEJ.

  21. i wish to say here that the former governor of borno state should be arrested for forming boko haram, he institutionalize it, if not financing it. some of the northern people are their looking for power, but they forgot that it is only god that give power, now i smell a rat among the military, how could they leave a place and boko haram come and strike. i believe their is an informant. army top head should check this.
this are innocent live been wasted. we should remember that one day we will all be accounted for it.
