You encourage corruption in Nigeria - Speaker House of Reps, Aminu Tambuwal blasts Jonathan

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has stated that President Goodluck Jonathan is encouraging corruption in Nigeria by his handling of corruption cases.

“The President’s body language’ seems to be encouraging corrupt practices in the country,” the speaker said.

Mr. Tambuwal said the executive arm, headed by Mr. Jonathan, has failed to act on corruption cases revealed by the National Assembly.

He spoke while responding to questions on Monday after he presented a paper titled the ‘role of the legislature in the fight against corruption in Nigeria’ at a one day roundtable to mark the international anti-corruption day organised by the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, in Abuja.

“Take the subsidy probe, the pension, the SEC probe and recently the bullet proof car cases. After the House of Representatives did a diligent job by probing and exposing the cases, you now see something else when it comes to prosecution.

“In some cases, you have the government setting up new committees to duplicate the job already done by the parliament. Take the bullet proof cars case, the NSA, with all the security challenges confronting the country, should not be burdened with a job that can best be handled by the anti-corruption agencies,” he said.

He also said the government has no business setting up any administrative committee in a corruption case that is clear to all Nigerians, in apparent reference to the committee set up by Mr. Jonathan to probe the N255 million car scandal involving the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah. The three-man presidential committee had since submitted its report to Mr. Jonathan, with the president taking no action.

“What the President should have done was to explicitly direct the EFCC to probe the matter. With such directives coming from the President, I am sure we still have good people in EFCC who can do a good job,” Mr. Tambuwal said.

“By the action of setting up different committees for straightforward cases, the president’s body language doesn’t tend to support the fight against corruption.”

While lamenting what he described as the selective nature of prosecution of cases by the anti-corruption agencies, Mr. Tambuwal pledged the support of the national Assembly in the fight against corruption.

    3. As the Speaker, you have the right to set up committees to look into any cases of corruption and publish your findings. As long as this hasn't been done, I can't tell the difference between you and Jonathan. If APC want to convince Nigerians that they are the right party, they shd stop telling us what we already know, yes there is corruption in Nigeria but what can be done to rid our beloved nation of this scourge.

  18. It is a shame that Jonathan is the best the SS, N-D can produce. He has blown the chances OBJ created for the minorities to have their own as numero uno. GEJ should be writing his resignation letter and rehearsing his resignation speech. NTA, Radio Nigeria get set.

  19. Anonymous 10.10 am and Co. its your like that are the problem of this Country. If a sinner summon courage to condemn sin, then there is hope for our generation. All the allegations against GEJ are facts and just a tip of the Iceberg. We should encourage our leaders to speak out and if other leaders notice corruptive tendencies in the House of Rep, they should speak out too. Finally, Tambuwal did not emerge through corrupt means. He was transparently elected by his colleagues. PDP was not happy with him for accepting to be elected and thats what we expect in all arms of government. We dont want selection of leaders. Let us elect whosoever we want to rule us at all levels and that itself is a fight against corruption. What do somebody mean by a Yoruba person was suppose to be the Speaker of the House? Is it the tribe that matters or who the people in the House wants to lead them. Is the House not supposed to be praised for ignoring pressure from the powers that be and going ahead to do legitimate election? God save Nigeria.

  20. Cant believe this. Pot calling kettle black! Our legislature is the most corrupt of its kind in the world. Compare their salary and allowances with others elsewhere and you will be totally disgusted.

  21. This is what I said will move us forward...what the speaker did. Thank you very much @anonymous 10:10. Am a Nigerian with open mind from Delta & live in PH. Why didn't Mr Speaker say anything when it was Farouk? Bankole? Etc You fool nobody, why not resign like its done in developed world to send the message clearly that you r clean. You are all involved and it didn't start with GEJ. You and your likes can't stomach it that he is from South South... Not business as usual for so many of your sponsors. Back to your point. President GEJ has failed me in the way he has handled corruption but I believe someday we would all know why. You don't become messiah overnight in a country like Nigeria. Your action is liken to a son who comes out in public to say his father has soiled his bed instead of changing out bedsheet. Am ashamed of you as a Speaker of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and let's know a precedent is been played out for I expect our Southern Legislators to do same when we do have a President from the North. If you don't respect your President now, expect same in future. Shameless speaker! Go hide your face! Too much power and money! Just like Amechi Rotimi

  23. Thumbs up Mr Speaker for voicing out what we all know. For those of you defending Jonathan and calling true democratic practice exhibited by the House of Representatives when they shunned zoning arrangement of the PDP and elected their principal officers themselves, I will say it's just unfortunate because you people don't love the truth. If the speaker is corrupt, the President should expose him too and let the EFCC do their job. All of you that talked about Faruk, at least he was arraigned in court but the man, Femi Otedola who gave the bribe is always seen travelling all over the world with president Jonathan. Is that the way corruption will be fought? NGN500 billion SURE-P money missing, over 8 trillion crude oil money missing said Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and we cannot pay Universities revitalization fund being demanded by ASUU and we have a president who should be accountable to this nation. The minister of finance told us that about 400,000 barrels of oil is stolen from Nigeria every day. We have the Navy, Air Force, Army, Police and even Civil Defence and armies of Niger Delta militants who were given pipeline surveillance contract under this administration. How many can we count? Maybe Jonathan will do something since it's now coming from the mouth of the number 3 man in this country. God will help this country because almost everybody in this country needs positive reorientation for the good of the country. May God bless Nigeria!

  24. Fellow Nigerians! Praise Almighty God for giving us the HOPE of our future.
Let us keep praying to Him for our salvation.
I supported Mr. President because i want all Nigerians to have sense of belonging to one Nation. But my parents thought me to support whoever is doing good. At the same time, they also told me to back out immediately the supported man stops doing good.
I wish Mr. President remembers his background and do good.
Until I see signs of changes for better in Nigerians faces, I can not continue supporting him.

  26. Speaker Tanbuwa, I salute your courage; you are a kind of person I want.

I love your courage, the truth is said already, the worse that would happen is president to hustle for your removal but the fact is already said though, we Nigerians know it before.

Some idiotic Nigerians are still against the assertions made by the Speaker. I can't just imagine how daft some people are.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It is good that the speaker has spoken up against the executive, if the executive has something against the legislature they can bare their mind to the public. It is called check and balance. If the speaker is serious that Mr. President is covering or encouraging corruption, I believe it is economic sabotage hence, an impeachable offense. The speaker knows what to do.

  28. Nedum
To think that you answer Chris and then think with your feet is such a disaster. What is disrectful about the speaker's factual comments and what is ethnic about it? What is right about 16 being majority over 19. You are doomed Nedum. GEJ has not scored a point on any scale of governance in 3 year as President. What explanations 'one day' are you talking about. Please change your name, Chris' don't think or talk like this.

  29. Mr. Jonathan, it looks to me that you are losing your party base faster than normal, even by Nigerian standard. It is a cause for worry that before your very eyes, and in the presence of the most powerful members of your party, your governors talk down on you and dare you.

ASUU has also dared you. CBN has dared you. EFCC, NNPC too. Do you still need anyone to tell you that the chicken is coming home to roost? Mr. 2015!

I HATE AND DETEST CORRUPTION AND ITS COVER-UP BUT LET THIEFS STOP SHOUTING THAT OTHERS ARE THIEF WHEN THEY REMAIN UNREPENTANT.THOSE WHO COME TO EQUITY MUST COME WITH CLEAN HANDS.
