The struggle continues: ASUU shares food, money among members

Striking lecturers at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on Wednesday received relief materials, including food and money to enable them to cushion the effect of the ongoing industrial action.

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of the institution, Dr. Mohammed Kabir-Aliyu, who confirmed this to one of our correspondents, said the offer would help the beneficiaries to survive the hardship occasioned by the non-payment of their salaries.

According to him, lecturers in the university have not earned their salaries in the last four months.
Among items distributed to the lecturers were rice, semovita, vegetable oil and cash ranging from N20, 000 to N50, 000.

Kabir-Aliyu said they were ready to call the Federal Government's bluff concerning the sack threat.
University teachers nationwide embarked on strike on July 1 to force the Federal Government to honour an agreement it had with them since 2009.

The Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had last Thursday threatened the striking lecturers to return to work on or before December 4 or face dismissal.

However, the resumption deadline was on Tuesday extended to December 9 to enable the striking teachers to honour Prof. Festus Iyayi, who died on his way to attend ASUU NEC meeting in Kano.
As of Wednesday, there were no signs that the striking lecturers would comply with the government directives to return to the classroom on Monday. Also, the university authorities had yet to issue a circular directing students to return for lectures.

Meanwhile, the National Parent-Teacher-Association of Nigeria has asked the striking teachers to see the extension of the resumption deadline as a sign of goodwill from the Federal Government.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, the NAPTAN North Central Coordinator, Alhaji Danladi Aliyu, said the extension showed that the government was committed to ending the strike.

Aliyu said, "I am pleading with both parties not to see this issue as a war that must be won or lost as both are working in the interest of moving the nation forward.

"ASUU should use this deadline extension to resume duties, while we also urge the Federal Government not to come down hard on them."

In a related development, Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch of ASUU has ordered its members that signed the attendance register to delete their names from the book.

Also, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has directed its students to resume on Sunday.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju on Wednesday said, "The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have announced Sunday, December 8, as the resumption date  for the 2012/ 2013 rain semester.

"Accordingly, students of the university are expected to come into residence on the above date as lectures will commence immediately."

    1. Your comment is exactly why Nigeria is where it is today. We never have guts to push a course till the end in this country. For the records, history is full of occassions where the people have brought govts to their knees. Just saying anyway as that is not ASUU's objective.

  3. ASUU and Fed govt. Must sign that agreement requested by ASUU because it is the only grounds for which ASUU will hold the govt. Accountable. The govt. Knows what they are doing. They are trying to make ASUU accept the terms without an agreement so that if they fail probably in 2014 to pay the 200bn for that year and ASUU goes on strike, they can get a court injuction that will declare the strike illegal and ASUU would not have a choice. That is the reason for implementing "recommendations" at the meeting with Jonathan and not "agreement" like the recent 200bn said to have been paid to CBN for 2013. What is interesting though is how naïve Nigerians are, this is the real issue. Govt. Is trying not to enter a formal agreement with ASUU to forestall future strikes over the issue by propaganda and public sympathy! Trust gullible Nigerians, we will all be quick to condemn ASUU. Well I no be lecturer and no one dey my family, I will just enjoy the interesting game of chess panning out.

  4. DECEIT LOADED POLITICAL & ETHNO-RELIGIOUS ASUU STRIKE

ASUU STRIKE IS CONSISTENT WITH OUR BOKO HARAM PHILOSOPHY AND WILL HELP RESTORE OUR BORN-TO-RULE ADVANTAGE – Dr Nassir Faage – ASUU President

Journalist : Good evening Sir. I am a Journalist and would like to know your profession and what you do and teach in the University.

ASUU President: My profession is strike and I do strike and teach strike in the University.

Journalist: Can you tell me why you choose Strike as your profession.

ASUU President: : Are you not aware that I am a born-to-ruin Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani and western education is forbidden in our religion and culture (Boko Haram). So with Strike as my profession I can contribute to the advancement of my peoples vital interests by ruining western education in Nigeria.

Journalist: What else do you think you can contribute to advance the interests of your people as a Professor of Strike.

ASUU President: Yes, as a Professor of Strike, I am in a better position to help my people bring down the “illegal” Government of President Goodluck Jonathan on or before 2015 and restore Aso Rock Presidency back to the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani. In fact, the strike is a big way of telling Nigerians that President Goodluck Jonathan is “weak, corrupt, mediocre, insensitive and not performing”.

Journalist : Sir why do you say that the Government of President Goodluck Jonathan is “illegal”?

ASUU President: Are you not aware that President Goodluck Jonathan is not from the Core North. He is an infidel Southerner. The Presidency of Nigeria must be reserved only for the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani .

Journalist : Sir, are you saying that the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani believe that they alone are born-to-rule Nigeria forever.

ASUU President: That is very correct and this present strike will not be called off until everybody gets that message and makes the necessary adjustment to ensure that, that message upturns present reality.

    Journalist: Goodluck to you Sir

ASUU President: Walahi Talahi ....... ba na so Goodluck ..... nyamiri ne !!!

NOTE: This shows ASUU is being sponsored by APC

  5. What about other ASUU members in other universities outside North? Yet another Northern agenda. This purely political and is being backed by opposition and those that said they will make Nigeria ungovernable. And our people here in the west, south and east are joining them to affirm, that peace will only be when a northern muslim is ruling.

  6. I am wondering the school this so called ASUU president and indeed the executives, why are behaving so uncivilized and as touts working for some political masters. It becoming very obvious that this yet another tool to continue make the country ungovernable. It is a pity our people are shipishly and blindly following them to extablish perpetual northern muslim "belief" that only them are created to rule the country. These lecturers are only used against themselves and their people. This is not just about GEJ or PDP, no......
