Jonathan challenges Obasanjo to prove sniper claims or forever remain silent

The Presidency on Sunday challenged former President Olusegun Obasanjo to provide evidence backing his claims that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is training secret snipers towards 2015 general election.

An 18-page letter written by Obasanjo was released to the media on Wednesday claiming the existence of the snipers towards eliminating perceived opponents as he leveled other grave allegations against Jonathan.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the Presidency asked the former President to prove his claims or forever remain silent.

The statement reads: “President Jonathan is running a people’s government. He does not need any snipers. His legitimacy comes from the people. Those who are alleging the existence of snipers should step forward and provide the evidence or shut up forever and go down in history as spineless cowards, driven by sheer greed and indecency.”

The Presidency also described the call by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Jonathan’s impeachment as reckless and irresponsible.

“We have noted with utter disdain, the reckless and irresponsible call by the APC on Sunday for the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan.”

“Ordinarily, we would not have dignified Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s latest vituperation in the service of his paymasters with a response, but we thought it necessary to warn that the Federal Government will not standby idly and let the nation be plunged into unnecessary crises and political instability because of the desperation and apparent readiness of the APC spokesman and his gang of power-seeking desperadoes to sacrifice the well-being of the country on the altar of their selfish personal ambitions.”

“The Presidency totally condemns the decision by Alhaji Mohammed and his party to move further beyond the bounds of honourable and acceptable political conduct with the senseless call for the impeachment of a President who continues to sincerely devote himself to the discharge of the sacred mandate freely given to him by Nigerians.”

“The APC, which remains a minority party with doubtful credentials in the National Assembly, knows fully well that its attempt to hector and blackmail a Parliament dominated by loyal members of the President’s party, the PDP, into an impeachment process, will come to nothing.”

  4. Well done presidency! It is indeed sad that an elder statesman like OBJ would wake one day and publish such a thoughtless letter to the people's president GEJ. Obasanjo's time is up and he is merely looking for someone to send him back to prison where he belongs. He should be made to give account of ITT, FESTAC, IPP e.t.c.- programs which he used to corruptly enrich himself. As for APC, it is just a yourba based party and will always fail in any other state. Remember Dr, Chris Nwabeze Ngige and Anambra Guber election. There is no need responding to APC. 2015 Presidential election will prove APC to be ethnic based party.

    1. U need to be re-oriented, tagging one political party on ethnicity will not bring the CHANGE we all want, have you ask yourself this question, the so called 'national' party that used your Niger Bridge as a campaign weapon what have 'they' done about it? Nobody heard about Nelson Mandela ethnic or his religion, so my fellas think about the country first because in a democracy dispensation each ethnic group needs each others!!!

God spares our lives and you'll know how the present administration has plunged the country to the depth of massive corruption. This isn't about PDP, APC, APGA, or others. It is about Nigeria existence! I remain Nigeria!

  7. OBJ as an ex General, ex head of state and ex president cannot just accused the office he occupied before for the fun of it. Let GEJ address the raised issues in the said letter, instead Abati with some unpatriotic elements are busy pouring abusive comments on people simply because they expose their paymaster's weakness. As for the Snipers case GEJ cannot exonerate himself from this present killing's since he is the president just like OBJ cannot vindicates himself over the killing during his tenure. As a matter of fact Good luck has failed people has lost confidence in him.

While OBJ as an elder state man was speaking, he never insult anybody even the presidency but advice for change of pattern of government. As a formal president of the country, he know well on how govt is run therefore if he say snipers are being trained, from my view point, no gain lying to nigerian with all the evidence provided to Nigerian. It not for this Reuben Abati who is being paid by taxpayers money to insult the formal president. Show evidence that you are not training snipers. Nigerian are well educated and will recognize one when shown. As a reminder OBJ never insult the president.

  9. Kubi Ben:Ecclesiastes 4:1 NKJV

Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun: And look! The tears of the oppressed, But they have no comforter— On the side of their oppressors there is power, But they have no comforter.
It is an abomination for kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.
I have not come to preach to anyone because am not a preacher and am not even aspiring to become one.
Despite all the prayers and the preachings that is going on at our churches every Sundays and weekly days, atrocities have become our Bishops, General overseas and imam's at our worship centers and that brought me to ask the same question as did by Sunny Okosie in 1986 when he released his hit Album (Which way Nigeria? ) when one speak about the evil that our leaders are commuting on daily basis if the ethnic fools did not counter ur critics the church people who are cowards and blind will tell you to go and pray for our leaders and I ask again, how can we be praying for our wicked leaders with an empty stomach when they are exercising their wickedness in abundance? if u are in their shoes will ever think of change knowing that that will bring an end to the opportunities that u have? .
Insanity they say, is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results, how can we continue to pray for these guys haven seen what they are doing which is wasting our resources, no accountability and when they come out at network news they acknowledge that their is corruption in the system with so many corrupt officials, ask them Who are those corrupt people? they don't know, maybe because i dont have any of my family members in government or politics that's why am saying all this as some people may view it but the if I be a child of God, I should be able to stand for what is right irrespective of the one who is commuting the crime.
Its time and we have grown wiser and we have found out that it is the same people who are helping us to track down the corrupt people are corruption themselves and we can't hide our shame and be praying for God to help us, its just a waste of time and energy, we need to forget who we are and what we are doing and match out for a revolution now its the time enough is enough.

  10. Let's stop beating around the bush, we may not specifically know who these snippers are, but an educated guess would be a millitant group that has been granted amnesty, a millitant leader that has been vociferous recently, a group that has his training ground/school on our door step, a millitant who was recently arrested and immediately released upon the meddling of our presidency in sovereignty of another country; which by the way is unprecedented based on the fact that many Nigerians are languishing in different jails abroad.

The onus isn't on us to prove these allegations but on the government as we Nigerians have gathered the facts as laid bare to us in different media outlets. Even if OBJ is wrong, you (presidency) have the capacity and moral obligation to show us (Nigerians) the truth.

Forget about politics, rivalry and writing nasty letters even our children are wondering if this government is only about responding in a derogatory manner.

My advice to the presidency; Authorise an unbiased team to investigate these allegations. If they are found to be false then you are vindicated and then you question the motives of these allegations.

Snipping the messanger before dealing with the message is not the way forward sirs. I'm very afraid for Nigeria as things are that being in Nigeria come 2015 is suicidal. Lets hope our neighbouring countries have enough camp sites for Nigerian asylum seeking multitudes. -GHN

  11. God bless you my brother, Ruben is running away from the truth. OBJ raised a lot of issues in his letter to the president and it's share laziness on the part of Abati to have chosen the easy way of name calling instead of addressing those issues. A competent president would have sacked him long ago. This country will never move forward until competent people are in charge of our affairs. It's disgusting for Ruben to be raining abuses on the person of Obasanjo just because he's a mere adviser to the president forgetting that OBJ as an ex-president deserves more respect than the president he is serving.

  13. The truth is that the GEJ government is broken and need serious repair quickly. People may hate OBJ but his remarks are valid. Of all the problems that OBJ identified in his letter to GEJ, GEJ only identified snipers. This shows that GEJ has failed Nigeria and he will continue to do so because he has no answer to the real problems of the country.

GEJ should face reality and read OBJ's letter with care. I believe OBJ decided to release his letter to the public because GEJ does not listen to warning and danger signs. At least, sensible Nigerians can now begin to ask GEJ the right questions. GEJ has access to sensitive information and he alone has the ultimate power to make drastic changes. OBJ is very experienced in Nigeria government and he knows the capacity of the seat of presidency.

GEJ has massive arsenal of power and authority e.g. Commander in Chief of Armed Forces, President, PDP Leader, Chief Security Officer of the Federation, etc.

Please GEJ, listen to OBJ. Two good heads are better than one. Seek counsel and implement good advice.

  17. It is unfortunate that we as Nigeria trivialize issues of magnitude of OBJs letter to the President.
Even the presidency with all the egg heads recruited at a very high cost to serve as advicers to Mr. President are also behaving like political street orchins.
The issue at hand is a grave one and does not deserve the kind of ethnic, political or religious treatment given to it thus far.
For the presidency, OBJ has called you a corrupt and a criminal lots. The reply should not be to ask him to prove it or forever keep quiet. This approach is petty as it is a lack lustre approach.
The presidency if it knows that Obj was being mischiveous, should sue obj for all he is worth and by so doing be vindicated by the court of our land.
But to resort to name calling and use of abusive language to describe obj in the media goes to proof that the presidency has a lot to hide, which means that Obj was indeed right.
If Obj is indeed right, their is no future for Nigeria and I strongly hope that the presidency will do the needful (by dragging Obj to court to either prove these alegation or be sentence for treasonable felony.

    1. I get so disappointed when I hear people say what was good in Nigeria before jonathan took over that he had removed?. Well Nigeria was totally free of debt before he took over but we know where we are now! Same for Nigeria foreign reserve! Nigeria only used average of 350B for subsidy in 1yr of jonathan we jumped to over 1Trillion! Yet nothing dramatic has changed in our petroleum consumption level. We use to pay 65 for a litre of petro but now 97 need I say more? If he will not improve the country at least he should not destroy the little we have!
