Nigerian Policemen threaten to go on strike

Some police inspectors and rank and file from the Imo State Police Command have threatened to go on strike over their redeployment to some violence-prone states in the North.

The aggrieved policemen who met in Benin, the Edo State capital, said they would start the strike in November.

But the Force headquarters has said that the redeployment will not be revisited or changed and warned the affected officers against blackmailing the police authorities.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, who was reacting to the threat of a strike by some policemen in Imo State Police Command, said that the Nigeria Police Force was a national organisation where police personnel could be deployed to serve in any part of the country.

Mba, who spoke over the phone on Wednesday, described the reported threat by the policemen as a rumour, adding that the same rumour was peddled when some policemen were transferred out of Lagos.

Some policemen that were redeployed to some northern states had threatened to embark on strike in November if their demands were not addressed.

They were demanding the reversion of the mass transfer of officers numbering about 100 from the cadre of Inspectors, Assistant Superintendent of Police and the Chief Superintendent of Police to the troubled areas in the North.

The officers alleged that their transfer which they described as punitive, was masterminded by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammad Katsina, adding that some of them had stagnated on a rank for many years without promotion.

But Mba faulted the position of the protesting officers. He said that they could not choose where they would serve, noting that the policemen in the North had as much right as those in Imo State to serve in any part of the country.

“The Nigeria Police Force is a national police, not a state civil service or a state police force. The implication is that you can be asked to serve in any part of the country, and as a police officer, you don’t have the right to choose where to serve or when to serve. It is a call to service. The benefits of being a police officer comes with the burden of discharging the responsibilities attached to being an officer and you can’t choose the benefits and reject the responsibilities,” he said.

  1. You've got a point there - The Police is a national organisation! The IG can as well relocate his office to Borno or Yobe state since that is the more troubled zone for now. Please lead by example and don't see your life as being more precious than an ordinary constable.

  2. How can policemen who breath out fire and brimstone on innocent civilians be afraid to face the real fight.

  3. Shame to Chris Mba for your useless statements. Why would Katsina select only or mostly policemen of Ibo extraction to Boko Haram prone zones while those from there be sent to safe areas. You are supporting the Northern programme of systematic wiping out Ibos. Boko Haram has killed more Ibos than any other tribes resident in the north. As if that is not enough, police (top ranking) who appear to be Boko Haram sympathizers are now trying to kill Ibo police officers by sending them there. The deaths of thousands of Ibo civilians is not enough for these vampires sympathizing and indirectly supporting. This is planned genocide which should not happen. Is GEJ or OBJ an Ibo, why are these northerners and BK angry with Ibos, targetting and killing Ibos. Is an Ibo cause of their problems. Tell me why they want Ibos exterminated by all means. In Anambra, several bodies of young men about 20 were seen floating on Ezu Rivers, fingers were pointing to them. Apo in Abuja so six young men were wasted by police. Uptill today nothing is heard of these killings of Ibos. Why this organized, and systematic killing. I think the best people to go these troubled areas men of police who understand the cultures and languages of the locals as requested by some Northern elites and suggested bt their commentators. Why then is Katsina, knowing the proper way which will help as deemed by the northerners, go the other way to use officers who will be endangered and poorly effective due to lack of language and culture understanding of the locals. Katsina should find another way for punishing officers from Ibo not by indrectly playing David sending Uriah (because of his wife) to be killed in war dangerous front without preparation and the necessary tools (language and culture).

  4. Corrupt officers in the force will continue to be the problem of the force.
Is it not yet time that we have state police?

Officers and men of the force from the North should be sent there to catch and prosecute their brothers who are fermenting trouble in the area.

Please leave the igbos alone, very soon all our enemies will be under our foot.

  5. Truely, islamic policemen who understand d terrain shld b used. Its wrong for dt police commissioner to recommend mainly ibos from Imo to strange land where even some security agents cd connive wt boko haram to unleash death on their fellow officers. This ibo massacre worries us.we all saw when truck-load of ibo corpse were brought to Anambra wt some unsympathetic remarks from Adamawa govt.It was in Kano they threw bomb on southeast- bound luxury bus, killing ibos in hundreds while d kano govt, instead of sympathizing, hurriedly drafted a manifest telling d world dt d southeast bound bus were loaded wt Hausas not ibos.i have heard my friends in armed forces say they are afraid of their fellow officers who are muslims bc they can lead u into a trap. Its just best to use d islamist policemen against d islamist bokoharam. If they decide to go and dine and wine wt each othfr,so be it

  9. You guyz are all fools! What makes you feel that the officers they are deploying from Enugu are Igbo officers? You guyz are bunch of illiterates whose brains are full of chaffs! You've just been told that the police force is a national force as such those officers may not necessarily be of igbo extract. They could be from another different tribes across the country serving in Enugu. But you dumb-assess will never think lyk dat bcos you are completely blind by tribalism and bigotry! Wait a second! Even if they are igbos they don't have any excuse not to go where they are being posted! Bastards wants to receive salary but they don't want to work abi? That will never happen. Since wen has it become an option to choose where one want to serve? Since wen?? Bastards ibos love money but they hate work!!! Now let me tell you dundees what it means to be a Poiice officer: It means serving your fatherland selflessly and putting your lyf on the line to protect the lives and properties of Nigerian citizens whenever and wherever you are commanded to do so! It does not mean selling spare parts in Enugu and receiving monthly salary from the coffers of the Police Force! No!!! So I challenge you animals to either honour your postings or resign from the police force with immidiate effect!!! We don't want cowards as police officers! We need MEN and we are aware that Igbos are Women! Idiots... -Concerned Northerner-
