Is ASUU ready to sacrifice?

The ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities which has shut our campuses for over three months has seen Nigerian students as the ones mostly affected by the crisis. Some of the lecturers teach in private universities and such have resumed there while the students are left languishing at home. Of particular concern to me however is the sacrifice that ASUU is also willing to pay in this crisis.

Whenever there is a dispute as this, there is usually no winner, it is no victor, no vanquished as all the parties involved must sacrifice something to resolve the crisis. Nigerian students are losing valuable months by sitting idle at home, the Federal Government is also being ridiculed in the public that it has allowed the strike to drag this long, my question then is what is ASUU also ready to sacrifice to see that there is a quick resolution of the crisis?

ASUU cannot play the holier than thou character here because it is part of the rot in the education sector. The lecturers extort money from students, molest our ladies, sit on university panels that recommend expulsion of genuine student activists, and do not show commitment to their work. What then are they ready to part with to atone for the pains that their strike action and unprofessionalism have caused Nigerian students?

ASUU is demanding that its salaries for the months they didn’t step into the classrooms be paid.! They want their own salaries yet they don’t care how long their students languish at home. Are they immune to making sacrifices? It is rather unfortunate.

  1. I am with u on this. ASUU in d actual scense is making a supper prifit in this strike; getting paid with no service rendered and having ample time to do there private thing. No sacrifice but gains for ASUU while fed govt, students and parient are on d lossing side. What an unfair situation. ASUU should also sacrifice their salary for d struggle if they r real. In America, Europe etc workers on strike are never paid.

America and Britain can be said to have the best academic institutions. Why are they not going on strike always? Academics and research are Industry driven not totally dependent on government funds. Professors over there are too busy with serious research funded by organisations in need of result that will help them improve their products( malaria vaccine by Smithline Bechem is a case in point). What happens here is that many professors and researchers receive government funds for research and lavish them on luxury-some take more wives and maintain concubines, others use it for traditional titles and politics and other vanities not related to the purpose of research. At last, no results yet they continue to demand for more funds for this or for that when actually the academics and researchers are just relaxed out there and waiting for the national cake. It is not supposed to be so. Even if politicians are all waiting for the national cake, people in academics are supposed to be different class and that is why they are the heart and brain of any nation. They are the people who no matter what always point the way forward. But how can they do that when they are placing themselves at the same level with other people.Fund for infrastructures are appropriated but even if it is not enough what are they doing with them. If one looks at the the environment of these universities one will weep. Is it lack of fund that makes the authorities not to even cut grasses ,mow lawns or keep the places clean? In fact, We all have to think and Pray for Nigeria. ASUU cannot claim to be what they are not.Even inside the universities see the dirty politics going on there at the expense of academics and excellence? It is all about, in most cases, selfish interest and in the end the poor hapless students suffer.God Help us all.
