The Nationality Question By Femi Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode is back with another article, and he calls this one 'The Nationality Question'

Permit me to begin this contribution with two incontrovertible assertions. Firstly had we successfully answered what has come to be collectively known as the ''Nationality Question'' in the '50's and '60's there would have been no civil war in 1967. Secondly had we not chosen to forget our differences but instead had we tried to understand them the last fifty three years of our existence as an independent nation would have witnessed far more unity, stability and progress than it has done.

The agitation and quest to answer the ''Nationality Question'' in Nigeria will not stop until the question has been successfully answered no matter how long our leaders, politicians, professionals and intellectuals ignore it and attempt to brush it under the carpet. The quest to properly identify, situate and define the rights, duties and obligations of each and every one of our numerous nationalities in a wider Nigeria will never end until it is achieved. As a matter of fact given the sheer desperation of each of the major ethnic groups to win control at the centre in 2015, the activities of Boko Haram, the agitation of the Niger Deltans, the resurrection of MASSOB, the unmistakeable resurgence of a rather extreme form of igbo nationalism, the activities of various ethnic nationalist groups and the growing religious and sectarian divide in our country it has only just started in earnest and it is a cause that I have chosen to dedicate my life to. As  long as I live I will resist the idea of any part of yorubaland being turned into a ''no-man's land'' where the yoruba people are meant to live as second class citizens and never-do-wells and where they are treated like filth. If that makes me a tribalist or a bigot, then so be it.

If loving my nationality, which comprises of 50 million yoruba people, and adoring my nation of 160 million Nigerians at the same time is a crime then I am guilty of that crime. I do not have to love one at the expense of the other. We are not America which is a nation that is made-up of immigrants and ex-slaves and a country which literally wiped out the indigenous population that they met there when they arrived who were known as the Red Indians. We are not Americans who somehow found their way into the world barely three hundred years ago but we are Nigerians. And each and every one of the great and numerous nationalities that make up our beautiful nation has a noble heritage that goes back for thousands of years. We may not be as developed or as wealthy as they are but we know who we are and we know where we are coming from. That is why I am proud of this country and all the various nationalities that make it up regardless of our difficulties and challenges.

Yet we are not so different to some others. In the United Kingdom there are basically four nationalities. The English, the Welsh, the Irish and the Scottish. Each of these four nationalities is actually a tribe yet you very rarely find a British person who will tell you that he is not proud of his Scottish, Welsh, Irish or English heritage AND at the same time proud of his nation. He is first an Irishman, a Welshman, an Englishman or a Scot before being British even though he  cherishes being both. He does not have to sacrifice his Irish, Welsh, English or Scottish heritage and roots for Britain and neither does he have to sacrifice Britain for his heritage and roots. He balances it well, he has the best of both worlds and this is indeed a wonderful thing. He derives his strength from both. He enjoys being Irish, Scottish, English or Welsh and cherishes it deeply just as much as he enjoys and cherishes being British. And today, centuries after Great Britain was established as one nation under one Crown and one Royal Sovereign the British citizen still cherishes his primary nationality and tribal heritage so much that power has been gradually devolved from the centre at Westminster in London to the various tribes and ethnic nationalities in the regions over the years.

Such is the agitation for the restoration of ethnic identity and devolution of power in the United Kingdom today that Scotland is preparing for a referendum to determine whether her people should remain in Great Britain or not. This is a beautiful thing. It is known as self-determination and no human being ought to be denied that right. Taking pride in your primary roots and your ancient heritage is not a crime. That is how it is meant to be. It is only in Nigeria that we call this perfectly natural and wholesome phenomenon ''tribalism''. We give it an ugly name and we ascribe to it an even uglier connotation. Everywhere else in the world the reality of ethnic nationalities is acknowledged, respected, valued, cherished and well-managed.

As a matter of fact such diversity is a source of strength and pride for many. For example in the nation of Belgium one will find that there is an ancient dichotomy and deep rivalries between the Flemish people of the north and the Waloons of the south. They speak different languages and have a completely different history and cultural heritage yet these two great and ancient nationalities or tribes are proudly Belgian and they rally under one flag. This is how it ought to be everywhere. I have no hate or ill-feeling towards any other ethnic group in this country or anywhere else. God knows that that is the truth. If I did I would say so and damn the consequences.

Racism and tribalism is below me and such primordial traits offend my sensibilities. To harbour such views is well below my intellectual and spiritual dignity. Those that know me well can attest to this. I am just too big, too large-hearted and too well educated for that sort of thing and most important of all my christian faith and heritage does not allow me to look down on anyone or any other race. We are all children of the Living God. I have as many non-yoruba friends just as I have yoruba ones. I look down on no other human being, no other race and no other nationality and I do not claim that the yoruba are better than anyone else.

What I insist on though is that I should be allowed to acknowledge my history and to preserve my ancient heritage, culture, values and ethos. I also insist that my people should be allowed to develop at their own pace. I am not ashamed of who I am and where I come from and had it not been for others holding us back I know where the south west and the yoruba would have been by now in terms of development. And neither would I go to England or America or Enugu or Kano and claim that I own the place or that my people built it from scratch and that they generate all the money that is there. I would never say or do such a thing and neither should I be expected to sit back quietly when someone says it about my land, my people and my territory. In this debate I have threatened no-one, I have incited no-one, I have accused no-one and I have not sought to silence anyone with threats or blackmail. I have not expressed hatred towards anyone. Yet my family has been subjected to insults, threats, humiliation, hate-speech, misrepresentation, falsehood, intimidation, calls for arrest and lies by some people who really ought to know better. My late father of blessed memory has been insulted during the course of this debate as has my late mother, my wife, my children and my people from the south west. We have been called all sorts of names and subjected to the most filthy and disgraceful abuse and malicious lies.

And now some ask ask me if I will ever stop this fight for the rights of my people. The answer is that I will not stop because a price has already been paid. I will never renounce my views. As a matter of fact now more than ever before I see how important it is for us to ensure a certain degree of separate development in this country and to hold on to our heritage because we are just so different. Those that have chosen the path of aggression and open hostility and that seek to suppress our voices, intimidate us into silence and drown us with their propaganda are vulgar, crude and rude. That is their way. They are also experts at telling lies. Yet they cannot silence a whole nationality or just wish us away. We are here to stay. I am not looking for trouble and I abhor strife and violence. To me this is simply an intellectual exercise and we can agree to disagree and still remain compatriots and friends. However I will not give up my identity because that is all I have.

I will not betray the dreams of my forefathers and their aspirations for our people. For four generations now the Fani-Kayode have contributed positively to the affairs of this country. Unlike some of those that are bleating and insulting us we have paid our dues. Like millions of others we have a stake here and we are from  yorubaland. I have a little fulani blood in me too and I am very proud of that but I am first and foremost a yoruba and I will live and die for the yoruba and indeed for my nation Nigeria if needs be.

I have written about virtually every major ethnic group and nationality in this country over the last twenty three years and sometimes in very harsh terms, including my own. Yet it is only when I disagree with some of our igbo brothers and sisters and dispute their claims on Lagos that all hell breaks loose. Well one thing is clear. Whether they like it or not as long as God gives me life I will voice out my opinion and articulate what millions of the yoruba are secretly thinking on this matter but are too shy, gentle and polite to say. They may not want to talk but I will talk for them and I will voice their legitimate concerns about the future of every yoruba child in an increasingly hostile, ugly and unsustainable Nigeria.

All the smear campaigns in the world cannot change that and neither can it stop it. If God does not smear me or mine, no man can smear us. This battle is more important to me than politics or anything else. It is a battle for the very survival of my people and my nation and with my intellect, my pen, my tongue, my knowledge and my wits I intend to fight it till the day that I die. It is my right to voice out my views and create awareness about the imminent danger that my people are facing of being overwhelmed by others that were never really part of them. They say our territory is ''no-man's land'' yet they will never offer us theirs in return or even allow us to build there. Who is the fool here? And when we complain they have the nerve to insult us. Enough is enough. It stops today. I am not a racist or a bigot but I believe that I have a right to defend that which is mine and to preserve my identity. Though I love being both, let it be clearly understood that I am a yorubaman before being a Nigerian and I make no apology for that.

We ignore our differences at our own peril and this is not only naive but it is also exceptionally dangerous. They made the same mistake in Yugoslavia through the '70's and 80's until the explosion came out of the blue in the '90's and all hell broke loose. No-one saw the war coming in that country except the more discerning and brilliant minds who had been shouting for decades before it came that their very own ''nationality question'' had to be answered and that Colonel Broznin Tito's dream of an eternal and everlasting old Yugoslavia was unsustainable.

No-one listened to those discerning voices and consequently millions were killed in the most horrendous and vicious civil war that Europe has ever seen. From being one country where the people and numerous nationalities were compelled to ''forget their differences'' by law, Yugoslavia was eventually broken up into five sovereign independent states as a consequence of fratricidal butchery and unrestrained and all-out war. I pray that we never break up and that we never witness or fight such a war in Nigeria. The answer is to understand and settle our differences and not to conveniently forget them.

It is important for u to know that as a nation we were supposed to tolerate, love and accommodate one another. There should be room for dialogue. Thank God for our communication system. It won't have been a difficult thing to talk about your intentions as regards actions you want to take than the nation embarrassment that is dished out. To crown it all your initial approach to this issue is rude and an insult to all Nigerian women.

  9. How can I see an article by a person like Femi and ignore it? I must confest that your writes up are very informative factul, logical and devoid of abusive words. U can be sure that all the coments from Igbos will be nothing but insults. They have no means of countering ur view, hence they face your personality, what a falacy! Igbo are indeed the problem of this nation. They claim everything good. I have not known a tribe as confused and greedy as Igbo. They claimed to have been of Hebrew origin, formed PDP and owned Porthacut. Little wonder they often get into big troubles that threaten their existence. Jona Jang should start driving them out of our beautiful Jos before they start laying claim to it. I always know that the Yorubas are better off intellectually in Nigeria and this can't be better confirmed than the number of Yoruba lecturers we have in our higher institutions here in the north. Femi, u endear me to Yoruba race even though I'm proudly from north. The truth must be told.

  10. Femi,if u really love your tribe as you claim, how many yoruba beggers have you rehabilitated? How many have you built houses for? How many street urchins (who are currently distorting and harrassing everybody in lagos) have you helped? In your own village, how have you helped the poor with your stolen fed money? or is lagos now your own villa?A yoruba lover indeed.biodun

  11. Ffk is my brother from another mother. He is very sound. I see from his eyes that there is unity in diversity. It allows us to respect one another.
Not belittle the other. It is grossly wrong for any tribe to suffer from superiority complex, this is what doomed Lucifer son of the morning.
I believe we need to respect every tribe individually in this country.
Respect is reciprocal. If we deny this we hug war, suffering, and genocide.
Nigeria, is begining to mature. I have always seen this in this cyber war that there is immense positive benefits that far outway all the insults catapulting.
It has allowed everyside to air there feelings and revealed unclear bias points parents have told there children. Children can now make there own decisions.
    Life goes on.
This is healing the hurtful feelings that have been nurtured before and after the civil war and all tribes in Nigeria took sides even though we like to deny that.
I believe in femi fani-kayode and support one Nigeria.

  14. Well said or written oga FFK...but I will urge people who truly believe in Nigeria, people who truly love this nation called NIGERIA to start to direct their writings their energies to save our system of government ... honestly it socks ... how can we youth continue to accept the way the NASS are bleeding the resources of this country dry via several ways ... via their wages ( a NASS member 'stealing' N30.4M per year, the highest paid in the world), what are they doing or contributing to the better of these country? Next, they siphon monies via secret companies with fictitious owners awarding contracts worth billions of Naira to themselves, contracts that will never see the light of the day ... yet our political and civil service systems are in dyer need of attention and rejuvenation but they all turned a blind eye ... Nigeria as country is a sick nation and nobody cares, our children and youth have no future.

How can you explain nations such as India, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia and China rising to better and more stable economies and polity though they were once within the same remit economically and politically with Nigeria just some 30-40 years ago ... yet our so called NASS and 'fake' leaders does not yet see the need to revolutionize our systems of governance and politics to take Nigeria to a better place among the comity of nations for our children yet unborn.

Oh, I weep each time I see how this country go down every year, every election year ... another government will come in in 2015 and destroy every structure that was built by the previous government... how can we move forward when we take one step forward and twenty steps backward ...how can we move forward?

These issues postulated above should be where I expect the likes of oga FFK and co to channel their energies and save this nation from, enough is enough of these historical facts that will never take us to anywhere as a nation.

Please be wise Nigerians and deliver yourself from these 'sounding brass' ... they are all empty word.

By the I am christian, of Yoruba extraction, a Nigerian living in the UK.

God save Nigeria ... God bless Nigeria!

  15. Some of us seems to misunderstood FFK. He is totally against the assertion of Kali Orji that Lagos is a NO MAN` S LAND and the Igbo ethnic group generates 56% of Lagos state revenue. This assertion is misleading and it tends to portray the Yorubas as lazy if another ethnic nationality could be generating over 50% of a Yoruba state.

Kalu Orji got it wrong and should be made to retract his statements.

  17. FFK, you keep on saying that you are not a tribalist but the subtle nuances in your message betrays you as you keep on neglecting or downplaying the efforts of non Yorubas in developing Lagos. Nobody is trying to take Lagos. We are all trying to make a living in Lagos, Onitsha, Kaduna, PH, etc. You also said in your earlier articles that Yorubas do not own property businesses or properties in the East. Well, note this-the Igbos are very hospitable to visitors to the East. Igbos will never prevent non Igbos from owning properties or businesses in the East. But Yorubas do not invest in the East or own properties there because they do not believe that there are much investment opportunities in the East.So do not hold Igbos responsible if non Igbos for their own business ideas chose not to invest in the East. But Igbos are prepared to work anywhere. I have never seen Yoruba or Hausa lawyers setting up firms in the East. But you see Igbo lawyers setting up firms in the North and West, traders setting up shops everywhere. That is who we are. We invest and work anywhere we feel we can make a living. Don't twist that into your own paranoid driven fantasies of Igbo domination.

  19. FFK your write up is filled up with contradictions which any discerning mind can easily see. In one breath you deny hating any tribe when the entire contents of your numerous articles drip with avid hatred for the ibos.
In your present article you actually echoed the very position taken by the ibos in the Aburi accord which was jettisoned by your fathers. (Please read and study the contents of that accord). They were the ones that insisted in one Nigeria contraption and forcefully returned the ibos into the fold.
Now it seems the ibos are becoming more Nigerian than you and you are getting agitated again. Haba FFK what exactly do you want. You and your cohort would appear not fit and proper for one Nigeria because you cant compete with the ibos?

  27. FFK does not sound a serious-minded person and one who does not fear God. There are millions and millions of positive constructive debates that we need at this critical time in the history of Nigeria which must impact values free from all forms of incitement of discords and acrimony. Your unbaked history knowledge should be kept and told to your children alone. Stop opening old and healed wounds. Our target now is to focus on the development of our dear nation and the way forward. Please stop drawing us back. We need intelligent write-ups that supoort and provide ideas towards provision of jobs for our teaming jobless youths, improvement of economy and social living, adequate health care, education, solution to terrorism etc. I advise you to stop asking for reproaches unto yourself by circulating rubbish to the entire nation thereby subjecting yourself to cheap and notorious agent of discord and disunity emanating from the bit of hell. You are from Ile-Ife and not Lagos, go back there and develope it better. One thing is certain -Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Edo etc we are one and cannot live without one another (the eyes cannot say it does not need the head, or the leg say it does not need the belly, of course every part of the body is dependent on one another to function effectively and what effects any part of the body effects the whole body system) Therefore, by God's grace we will NEVER, NEVER be divided. Any Nigerian is FREE to live in any part of Nigeria irrespective of your states of origin. My candid advise is that you must have to make restitution in any area you're found wanting, either in government, family, national, ethnicity circles etc.

  32. It seems the majority do not understand the clamour of FFK. He is just trying to set things right before the tenants will claim the property of the land because of the laxity of the landlord(yorubas). He is a wise man and all terms need to be defined. We have seen several cases of tenants snatching the properties of their landlords because of too much openness on the landlords' side. We need to define this: Lagos is a yoruba land, no more no less. It isn't a no man's land.
No other tribe should dare claim it, if they are not satisfied, let them go ahead and develop theirs since we all know that: no place like HOME!

  33. Well written article of unrepentant sectional bigot and tribalist. Hear him, "

"Though I love being both, let it be clearly understood that I am a yorubaman before being a Nigerian and I make no apology for that.

FKK is showing signs of cowardice by denying many things he said. He is begging and weeping up sentiments having been told by Mr. Aribisala the truth about his father and many things his father did not tell. He has come to his wits end and must stop his blabling. He is a loser, he is not more yoruba than other yorubas like Aribisala. At least we can still find among yorubas some truthful, anti-tribal, and peace loving Individuals. I used to think every yoruba man supports his own whether he/she is wrong/right as long as he is speaking in favour of yoruba. God will bless you Aribisala. Fani should go and study about his family, yoruba and nigeria at large. I am beginning to doubt how he studied, is it oxford/cambridge? One who should have been well informed and understand the dynamics of the present society, he should know nigeria is moving from tribalism. But this fellow fani still trying to drag us back. Nigeria belongs all, not just yorubas.

  34. Its very important for all Yoruba to rally support for FFK. I really wish the Yoruba OBAs intervene in this issue urgently. Orji kalu ignited this crisis while FFK equally got it a little harsh thereafter. Yoruba and Igbo were good friends, inter-married and shared similar social life. Igbo should stop thinking they owned Lagos or that its a non-mans land.,,,,,VERY INSULTING to a true Yoruba man. Urji should apologize to the Yorubas while FFK should do thesame to the Igbos. thank you

  35. Whoever listens when a fool talks must expect to hear foolishness. Fani-Kayode conceded that he has written about other ethnic groups in harsh tone for over 23 years and they did not respond. He wonders why the Igbos should. When you describe an entire tribe as "uncouth, uncultured and unlettered", you should expect a proportional response.

  36. the problem is far beyond the reasoning of the antagonists, or either they pretend not to understand the politics. An ignorant shout of foul play where there is no foul. You have to know your enemy before you can act, The ibos ware being murdered in the north like chicken in all the regions, they are too vulnerable to attacks and been killed in the north and at the end they see southwest to be their enemy where they enjoy utmost freedom. Is there any sense in that. let them answer that.

  37. My comment on FFK stance on issues is that he is a tribalist. But the truth is every other Nigerian is. What is written is not what is followed. While one cannot proclaim himself as a tribalist, in Nigeria every one has a tendency to ignore the worry of others but themselves, their families, their clan, people they share the same religion with e.t.c. That makes the difference. When Orgi Uzor Kalu commented on the issue of deportation, he chose, delibrately, to complain of the Igbo people who are deported knowing fully not only Igbo indegenes were deported. If he had said Nigerians were deported, it would have been a national issue not a tribal issue.

  38. Where is the idiot Kalu the theif ? Ever since FFK has been writing, i have not seen any reply. Shameless Kalu. That is how they start the civil war which they could not withstand. I have not read not one single counter, as agaist FFK. Where are the so called Igbo intelectual. Did they all died along with Chinua Achebe or have they falling apart ? Truth be told the igbs should call themselves to order.
Some have written as above, yet they refuse to put their name. Anonymous is nobody's name. Did FFK hide his name? So if not that majority of the igbos have no shame and as such being cowards. Come out put up a better arguement that can compete favourably with that of FFK. Bunch of felows without concience. I am really ashamed of the South Easterner (Igbos)

HIS ULTIMATE AIM IS TO INCITE THE YORUBAS AGAINST THE IBOS SO THAT HE WILL ATTRACT SOME RELEVANCE SINCE HE HAS BECOME JOBLESS. U HUMBLE SUGGESTION IS THAT A BOUNTY BE PUT ON HIS HEAD IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE THIS COUNTRY CANNOT AFFORD WHAT HE IS AIMING TO ACHIEVE. HIS INFANTILE MIND ALSO MADE HIM MENTION NAMES OF IGBO WOMEN HE HAS BEDDED. WHAT A SHAME ON HIM. HE DID NOT EVEN CARE ABOUT THEIR MARRIAGES JUST BECAUSE HE WANTS TO PROVE THAT HE HAS BEEN "THERE". DISGUSTING . Gaddafi from Owerri

  42. Its only an intellectual debate. Remember the type some of us did while in primary/secondary school; For or Against!

We all should respect Femi Fani-Kayode's strong view and believe. No insults or threats should be made at him or his.

Religion is simile to Culture / tribe. No religion will bulge for the other or be refered to as inferior, or neither would the christians lay claims to Sokoto state and think to ever succeed.

    Fani-Kayode has stirred passions and a re-awakening.

I suggest other intellectuals should come up with thought provoking articles rather than criticism.

  43. This article is polemical in discussing the nationality question and as such no pedestrian rant can take the intellectual depth inherent from it. Our 'Omoluabi' syndrome is what brought us to this situation where refugees are gradually laying claims to rented lands. Ride on ehbon FFK. anchorpoint01@gmail.com (Mind you, the gentility of the tiger shouldn't be mistaken for cowardice)

  45. FFK, indeed this rejoinder clarifies your stand and i believe should throw more light on your initial write ups. I am glad i didn't jump to conclusion; since i really couldn't understand the basis or logic in your initial write up. I believe every truly educated and unbiased Nigerian should find clarity, better understanding of your objective and the inherent danger in the current race for ethnic supremacy and gang up. Intelligent and thought provoking write up. KUDOS FFK!!

If you & probably your tribe are tired of getting along with other tribes & indeed with the rest of Nigeria as a Nation, could you pls go ahead and proclaim a Nation exclusively for Yoruba & leave us alone. We're tired of all this your beating about the bush. Be courageous and pronounce your objectives.

    3. The best way to reclaim what you have is take it away. Declare the ODUDUWA NATION & bar other Nationals from coming there. If u can't do that, then keep quiet or tell us how you can move Nigeria forward. No wonder when got your own shot at the National cake, you took your own deep cut. You should be having sleepless nights thinking of how to free yourself of the claws of the EFCC.

  48. It is amazing and surprising to hear people hulling abuses on Femi Fani-Kayode simply because he countered Kalu Orji's claim of The Ibos having a stake in Lagos as owners of the land. Femi's contribution has brought out so many facts about our history as a nation. Before the "Nigerian Nation" were the "Nationalities of different tribes" which made up the "Nigerian Nation". Kalu Orji and the other Ibo leader started it all when they try to make a political gain from what the Lagos state government did in returning some destitute in Lagos back to their home town in the East, making it look like they were sent home because they were Ibos, ignoring the fact that destitute from other states like Ogun and Osun were also sent to their various States and in addition to that, when Abia state Government sent anambra state citizens back to their state as destitute no comment or opposition were raised by this so call "Ndigbo" leaders. Some Ndigbo leaders started this and you should be ready for whatever is coming. Lagos and Western Nigerian belong to the Yoruba Nation. The issue of Nationality have being brought to the table by the Ibos again. FFK has made clear the position of the Yorubas, we are Yourubas before we are Nigerians. Our territories are clearly marked out. No other tribe or tribes in Nigeria or anywhere should take our generosity as a people for granted, enough of the insults on FFK as any insult on him and what he stand for is equally an insult on the Yoruba Nation. What is wrong with Femi Fani-Kayode stating his position on issues and matters as this. This is an intellectual discourse, only unlettered and uncouth person will use abusive and insulting language instead of constructively contributing to the debate . FFK has not insulted the Ibos, he only responded to the aggressive and dis-respective manner of some of the leaders of the Igbos.
