'Eagles need a foreign coach'

Kojo Williams, a former chairman of the Nigeria Football association (NFA) has blamed the Super Eagles technical crew headed by Stephen Keshi for the ouster of  the national team from the ongoing FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

The African champions, defeated Tahiti 6-1 in their opening match but went on to suffer consecutive defeats to Uruguay and Spain to exit the tournament in the first round.

Kojo, who had predicted, in a past interview with Sports Vanguard,  that the Super Eagles were going to be exposed at the Confederations Cup, said that he had been vindicated with the event that unfolded in Brazil, adding that Nigerians should expect more doom in subsequent international matches.

"I just think that we were technically bereft and to show how disgraceful and incompetent we are, Keshi, in the days before the match against Tahiti, said that he had no knowledge of Tahiti. He said he had never seen anything of them before. Imagine such a statement from a coach, who lives in America. Couldn't he have gone online to search for materials on Tahiti? Tahiti were champions of Oceania and Keshi didn't kinow how to get tapes of their matches?

"His counterpart from Tahiti said he watched clips of the Eagles at the Nations Cup. But our coach said that he did not know anything about Tahiti. It shows that we are not professionals at  all. Coming to Uruguay, Keshi also showed that he knew nothing about the champions of South America, Uruguay, who are an aging side and yet we could not expose them. Our boys had no technical depth, which is a fault of the coaching crew. You saw how Uruguay played and a good coach with the same boys we had could have beaten Uruguay.

"I said it before that we needed sound  technical guys to come in and work with our team, because if   we left the job to the present coaches, then we would get more hammering in the future and that was what happened in Brazil.

Did you see that Spain were relaxed and they still walked past us? Did you see that if they needed more goals to qualify that they would have scored more? I said that we were not going anywhere with that team and some people thought I was wrong.

If we are contented being among the best in Africa I don't have problem with that. We can continue with what we are doing with Keshi but if we want to be among the best in the world then we must help Keshi with a good foreign coach . The problem is that they would not go for the right foreign coach."

Kojo  laughed off suggestions that the Eagles missed the likes of Emmanuel Emenike and Victor Moses in the attack.

"It is not an acceptable  excuse that for missing a player or two your team crumbles. Nobody should tell me that.  This is a nation of more than 160 million people and we must put our house in order.

Look at Spain, they could afford to play with their substitutes and still get the results. I don't want to hear that we missed Emenike.

That is not an excuse because whether with or without Emenike, the style of football we are playing is the problem, the tactics. We saw how we played and we knew that we could do better".

On practical steps to take to get the team back in line, Kojo said that the technical crew has to be rejigged, with the addition of technically sound foreign coaches from Europe.

''The way we were attacking was negative. We were going forward, then we would pass back. We could not do anything with our attacking  movements. I am not saying that we should do away with Keshi but I am insisting that we need people who can get change our game and get us results", added Kojo.

Do you agree with Kojo?

  1. Oga Kojo you are just living in the past. What is wrong with what Keshi is doing? How many "Foreign Technical advisers" have we hired? Which of them got it past Westerhorf and Bonfre Jo who left without building future stars? Keshi is building for the future. Imperialists and slave merchants like you shouldnt set us back.

  4. Because nigerian have freedom of speech don't mean we can say whatever we like. Speech from people like Kojo is not suppose to be publish. They where the one heading the NFF when our national team didn't progress. Foreign coach my foot. Maybe we will be needing angels from heaven.

  5. Keshi is not doing bad 4 nw bt he needs to do away with some player in d team,he shld invite more expirence strickers who can outrun any defender nt aimless stricker like Brown,Gambo,Akpala etc.Keshi shld learn to forgive we need result.

  6. I totally agree with Kojo. You don't take an average team to such tournament of Champions to experiment players.
We could have done better, any reasonable coach should have searched for alternative puurposeful top strker, we don't have a super sub or even bench. Emenike is not the only top 9 Nigeria has in Europe na.
Coaches that want to succeed, scout for players so that they can have alternatives. No player like late Yekini to work with Ahmed Musa's crosses or Mikel's through passes.
We all want the best for Nigeria and a good African representative and a researcher/spy on our future opponents.
    One Niaj, one love.

  10. Hope this is not a joke?? what wrong has Keshi done??? bros just mind your business and let the man do his thing. he should be applauded for revealling and unveillig new plaers that can fit in internationally. Even with the numerous injuries that wretched the team, he they performed. black man mentallity about foreign coach is really absurd.

  11. Eagles do not need a foreign coach. Keshi is a capable coach for the job and people should allow him free hand to exercise his football professionalism to make Eagles better.

The Eagles team need encouragement. In the event of the past few days, the team would have learnt a lesson from their encounter to build the future. How can the Eagles progress if we decide to change coach all the time?

No foreign coach can do as well as Keshi. People should give Keshi all the support he need to build the Eagles team we will be proud of.

  18. We should all leave Mr Kodjo alone.Keshi is not good enough, Kodjo has said it all.
Nigeria had the opportunity of defeating Spain under a technically sounded coach.
We truly had the opportunities of going tops, but those boys were wasteful..

  19. NFF OUR THE ENEMIES OF FOOTBALL IN NIGERIA. Thank GOD my fellow Nigerians are responding wisely to Kojo.

NFF call for foreign coach is not for our interest, the executive members of Nff always have their shear from foreign coaches. They have been looking for means of removing keshi even before Nations cup.

If you love football do everything to see that Keshi is given independent control of our National team. Why are we So inpatient ???????? From the look of the tournament our best players are having Injury, NFF OUR THE ENEMIES

  21. We DON'T need a foriegn coach. Shame on all who r saying their mothers soup is not sweet.Keshi shld wake up n learn to b d big boss dat he is called, learn to b a father to the team, bringing in d wayward ones back instead of throwin away d bath water n even d children. A word is enuf for d wise.

  22. Kojo and all the people calling for foreign coach a simply foolish. Let us make it crystal clear. What happened to Nigerian football when Kojo was NFA chairman? What did we win? Where did we play. After the era of Westerhof (and Keshi) which other regime in Nigerian football has done this well? I think Kojo should get a job and get busy. What foreign coach can turn around a corrupt people and system into champions?

  23. Kojo Williams, if u r lookin 4 any relevance in d sports (football) community u beta b object. 'cos ur arguments & observations r very biased & unfounded. So majority of us Nigerians love what Keshi is doin wit d team so far.

  24. It appears many of you did not read between the lines. Kojo seems, in my view, to be "testing the waters", believing that some people who are connected to the "Oga on the Rock" and who may not like Keshi & the recent "effrontery" of his boyz in Namibia, may just lash unto his "suggestion" and convince the Oga on the Rock to appoint him (Kojo) as special Consultant to contact & engage " a technically sound" foreign coach for Nigeria ahead of the Mundial. Just keep your fingers crossed and watch & see. Keshi's enemies are members of his household! May God help him.

  28. I'm glad that The majority of Nigerians realize what is happening.. Super Eagles are getting better!!! Watching the confederation cup, it was obvious to see that Super Eagles played well in the tournament.. we could have even beaten Uruguay on a good day, but that's football.. you win some, you lose some.

We all know why Mr. Kodjo and his cohorts want a foreign coach... I only hope that before my time is up on this earth that Nigerian 'leaders' in all areas will rise above putting money first, and instead putting national pride and patriotism first. I don't know why we can't copy good things... Check the top 10 football teams in the world, count the number of foreign coaches that manage these teams.. them Mr Kodjo, you can come and tell us why we should be hiring a foreign coach.

Oga Keshi.. all I can say to you is.. Welldone!!! History will remember you favourably... and your record will put your detractors to shame!!!
