A magistrate of the Chief Magistrate’s
Court, Yaba, Lagos State, Mrs. S.K Matepo, expressed surprise after two
accused persons said they had no parents or relatives to check on them
and help with their criminal matter.
The accused persons had told the magistrate that they had no parents or relatives after she asked why they could not employ the service of a counsel.
Matepo, in her reaction, said, “I am sure you were not born through Immaculate Conception, neither did you fall from heaven. What I can see is that you are enjoying the prison and you don’t want to come out, so, since there is no surety coming out, you will continue to stay there.”
The response drew laughter from people in the court.
The duo, Chibuzor Ojimba, 23 and Uche Nwoka, 18, had been arraigned on two counts of armed robbery in June 2012.
They were alleged to have used locally made pistol and other dangerous weapons to dispossess one Chidi Eze of N70, 000.
They were however given bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties which they had not been able to meet.
The matter was adjourned till May 20 (today) for mention.
