Okada rider remanded in prison for robbing with toy gun

An Ikeja Magistrate Court, Monday, remanded a 21-year-old Okada rider, who allegedly used a toy gun to dispossess his victim of cash and property valued at N48,000.

The defendant, whose name is Akinyemi Gbenga, who was arraigned before Magistrate O. Sule-Hamzat, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the defendant committed the said offence on January 24, 2013, at Charity Bus Stop, Oshodi, at about 5a.m.
He said the defendant, who is an ‘area boy’, along with others now at large, attacked one Juliet Ibekeme.

Unuigbe alleged that the defendant, armed with a black toy gun, robbed Ibekeme of one Nokia 6070 valued at N27,000; jewelleries worth N10,000; cosmetics valued at N5,000; and a cash sum of N6,000.

According to Unuigbe, the alleged offence contravened Sections 1(2)(a)(b) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provision, 2003.
However, when the charge was read to the defendant he pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge but was denied bail.

Magistrate Mrs Sule-Hamzat, remanded the defendant in prison custody pending legal advice from the Director, Public Prosecution DPP.

She further adjourned the matter to March 19, 2013, for DPP’s advice.

Man, 63, docked for issuing dud cheque

Meantime, a 63-year-old man, Seyi Omolade, was arraigned, yesterday, before an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly issuing a dud cheque of N2 million to his landlady.

Omolade who resides at 6, Segun Ogunnaike Street, Magodo GRA area of Lagos, is facing a count charge of fraud.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Roman Unuigbe, told the court that Omolade had issued a dud cheque to one Mrs Ngozi Uganeme, on March 15, 2012, being arrears of payment for rent.
Unuigbe alleged the defendant issued a cheque of Skye Bank to Mrs Ngoizi Uganeme knowing fully well that he had no money in the account and when she went to withdraw the money the cheque was returned unpaid.

The defendant’s counsel, Mr Terry Adeniji, told the court that Omolade is a diabetic patience and that the issue before the court is a landlord and tenant matter, asking the court to grant the defendant bail in liberal terms because of his health condition.

According to the prosecutor the offence committed is punishable under section 319 (b) sub section 320 of the criminal laws of Lagos state 2011.
When the charge was read to the defendant he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
However magistrate Mrs O-Sule Hamzat granted him bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the matter till 12 March 2013, for trial.
