Private Jet Controversy: CAN hits back at Kukah, Bakare

Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has condemned comments credited to the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah and Pastor Tunde Bakare, who claimed that acquisition of private jets by religious leaders diminishes moral voices of the church in the war against corruption and are therefore calling for a revolution in the Church of God. (If you  missed it click HERE )

Speaking in a telephone interview, National Director of Research, Planning and Strategy, Elder Sunday Oibe, urged the Catholic bishop and the former vice presidential candidate of CPC, that if they have anything against the person of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, they should come out and say so, and not hide under the cloak of the gift of a jet to attack the CAN president.

Oibe, who doubles as the Public Relations Officer of Northern CAN, said he who lives in a glass house should not throw stones.

He said: “If there is any clergyman in the country whose constituency is government, it is Bishop Kukah, who served every government in power in the last decade.

“He thinks people have forgotten in a hurry how he served in Obasanjo’s government and turned round to attack the former president, or his fraternity with the former Governor James Ibori and his Rivers State counterpart, Peter Odili.”

Wat significance is d Jet to d CAN President? Yet, youths roam around lookin for jobs. If d amt used for the jet purchase was channelled towards financing some good innovative projects for youths, would it not be better? I rest my case.....

  3. iit is not the jet that is realy the issue here, the monetary worth of it is what we should be concern about. You imagine the respond Jesus would'v given those offering such thing tohim. Let our men of God learn to say NO THANK YOU, BUT PLS DO SOMETHING TO HELP CHURCH MEMBERS THAT ARE SURFERING. The ppl that gave out Jet how much have they done to help the poor in their church. If you find out the truth, may be just 0.0012% of half the amount of the Jet. GOD HELP US.

  5. The CAN spokes person is funny. He has abandon the subject while chasing the object. the issue here is the appropriateness of the jet gift. I knew this kind of thing will happen to CAN. before now the PFN use to run parrel to CAN, and has remain apolitical. Today, the reverse is the case. Lord have mercy!!!

  6. Exactly. And truely truely, which ever way you look at it, a gift of jet should be condemned by the church. The pastor should use that money and prosper the less priviledged in his church.

  7. If it doesn't sound right, feel right, taste right.....then it is safe not to assume it as right. Having said this, it may not be wrong to own a Jet, but under the context they find themselves...the above is real.
JESUS the reason, they claim to have the profession, was rather selfless. In one session, he asked a young rich man, to sell all his owned & follow him...he walked away, sadly (I call that integrity, not pretending that he can assume a lead-followership position with Christ)

  10. How many of them that attacking because of Jet gift that have not collected one or two gift from their members before? They have received cars, houses & all manners of gifts...........because a gift of Jet has not be given to them, they are shouting. They should wait, their own jets are coming.Abeg, leave the man alone.Let God determines!

  11. As for me Bakare and Kukah are jealous.
Also the only "man of God" who has the right to speak against the gift of a jet to Papa Oritsejafor is that one who have not collected any gift(chicken)/offering/tithe(money) from his congregation. This is what Jesus meant when He said; 'he that is without sin should cast the first stone'Selah!

  15. Well, those crucifying anyone for speaking the truth is an agent of the evil one. Christ himself condemed the Saduccess and the Pharasees. Christ did not preach or teach to please anyone -mind you. So all those saying this or that about those that criticize their own for improper conduct should know that judgement is hanging on their heads on that day.How come people are using the name of God to destroy homes, Wreck families, deceive people and for self aggrandizment.

  16. Elder Sunday Odibie, although, I am a Muslim but I was discouraged with your argument; to me, it sounds as if you were boot-licking for Ayo . As a man of God can't you encourage other Pastors and Imams to emulate TB Joshua?

Don't you know the value of a private jet? If this money was to be used in building human being what do you expect to be the outcome.

Awolowo argued that the best investment is the one you invest on human being just like what TB Joshua is doing or aren't you happy with it.

The way we go about the work of God in Africa; Nigeria to be specific is somehow different. please let's engage our selves on needful events.

    1. Yemo, just concentrate on your religion and advice the blood thirsty boko haram. How many gifts have you rejected before. Human beings are full of pretext. Even if he bought it himself, you have the right to spend your money the way you like provided you do not commit crimes with it. Your boko brothers are busy buying bombs and killing people. Talk to them. - aj

  17. Stealing! Stealing! Stealing!.Stealing in the name of the Lord. My Father's house of worship has become the den of sin. The pastors drives fancy cars and enjoy everything that is good.Yet, the congregation live in poverty and give him charity!Stealing in the name of the Lord.Let break this armour of ignorance and set my people free.Stealing in the name of the Lord. Why are we surprised that these men and women of god are doing what they are doing.Money is now the God they Worship. Some women even throw their teenage daughter on the pastors only to turn round and cry rape... Rape.... It is a shame

  18. Why are some people so hypocritical about life and so sad some so called christians? Our LORD JESUS CHRIST in all His Majesty did not meet the needs of every poor person and He said " you will have the poor with you everyday for the rest of your lives" Mark 14: 1b (MESSAGE TRANSLATION) and if He did not do it no human can meet all the needs. The Gospel is to be preached to the poor for their liberation from poverty having their mind renewed first then other things can now follow on their own accord.
Let us stop chasing shadows and let's fight the good fight of Faith.
This uproar is as a result of the conspicuous nature of a Jet what about those secret landed properties, cheques, first class tickets, houses, children school fees etc couldn't these have been given to the poor? Please let's serve GOD and drop the non essentials.

  22. Ladies and gentle men in the house, please lets get the issue at hand straight forward, Are you saying that it is a sin for pastor to own private jet or such properties? Where and where did Bible which is our instructor through the help of the Holy spirit did states expressly that we should not have or have.

Abegi, leave pastor's alone - they are human being as well, there is no one on earth whose did not like good things; therefore set aside sentiment and jealousy in the name of sanitizing the household of God.

As long the money used to purchased the jet was not stolen or embezzled, therefore anybody can use any properties as long as God given you the opportunity.

Its now left for God to challenge the owner of the property either to query them the purchase or ask them - why dont you use the money to help the poor? To me its a judgement of conscience, the Bible says if our conscience by the power of the Holy Spirit did not condemn us, we shall have a glorious peace.

  24. Obos Idemudia, Is like your Bible is Warri made and your interpretation Wafi too.Come to think of it; the first set of apostles of Christ lived a communual life-they share things in common.Bros, you have left even the point here. The point:Is it morally justifiable and right for these men to live in such affluence while their gullible followers who support these their lifestye live in dehumanizing poverty. They pay this and pay that and even build schools that their children cannot attend. My question to you Odos Idemudia is: Who inherits these Private Jets and Luxury assets owned by these church founders when they leave this earth to meet the Lord?We have been fooled around for so long.I think the scales in the eyes of the so called "Born Again" is beginning to fall, And for others there is a proverb that"A dog destined to die will no longer recognise the whistling of his Owner or Masters" In other words "A sturborn chick destined to die will first lose the power of hearing the screeching of the predator birds".They preach that "poverty" is not of God but some career men left their work and followed Christ for the sake of the Gospel.Christ whole ministry on earth was about salvation and doing the will of his father in Heaven. He never Projected earthly prosperity and wealth. There is probem in christiandom and the truth is that most called Men of god are Business men. 26. Many Christians have been murdered or even butchered by the new northern muslim youths guise called bokoharam with little or no payback killings by the christian youths. Think of the carnage in a church at kogi; what of the Corpers and the students at a poly and many others. At each CAN will only condemn, condole and then consolidate. Today, CAN president has a plane gift while GEJ watches on. Gains of consolidation. Empty CAN makes the most noise. Think of the noise of a jet. Disband this CAN now

  29. A religious leader should not or is not expected to live an extravagant life, gift or no gift! Did he even care about the source of the money used in buying the jet?[only thinking aloud] Moreover, such money can be used to help many children to be what God wants them to be. Jesus said many will come to him and he would tell them he know not them.......because they ignore the yearnings of their 'brother'. Early Christian Leaders used Church money to provide cheap but quality education, which many of these recent Leaders benefited from, but now, only the rich can go to the schools own by churches nowadays. What an irony! The same was the case with Fashola on LASU's case.

  30. its very sad that christianity is now all about materalism.. christ never owned so much as a donkey. his diciples who preached the doings and word of God never accepted gift or payment for services rendered so wat in God names are our pastors doing now. if christ accepted gifts for every miracle he performed in his life time then he would have been a super rich man just like our pastors are today. call a spade a spade. christ said follow me and i will make u fishers of men not fishers of wealth. the apostles are poor till death, arent pastors suppose to follow in their foot steps?
