Babalakin’s illness stalls arraignment over Ibori’s loot

Wale Babalakin

Chairman, Bi-Courtney Highway Services, Dr. Wale Babalakin, on Thursday, failed to appear before a Lagos High Court, Ikeja, where he was to be arraigned for allegedly laundering money for convicted former governor of Delta State, James Ibori.

His counsel, Ebun Sofunde (SAN), told the court presided over by Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo, that his client was indisposed and was on admission at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
Babalakin, alongside Mr. Alex Okon, is standing trial for allegedly aiding Ibori to launder N4.7bn belonging to the state.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which preferred the charge against the accused, said they used different companies as conduits to carry out the shady deal

Others charged along with Babalakin and Okon are companies said to have been used to perpetrate the alleged fraud. They are Stabilini Visioni Ltd., Bi-Courtney Ltd. and Renix Nigeria Ltd.
The accused are facing 27 counts of conspiracy and fraud.

The EFCC alleged that the accused had fraudulently assisted Ibori to transfer various sums to Erin Aviation account in Mauritius for the purchase of a Challenger Jet.
The anti-graft agency said the transactions took place between May and September 2006 when Ibori was the governor of the state.

EFCC counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), in his remarks alleged that Babalakin was employing tactics to frustrate his arraignment.

Jacobs, who expressed shock at the development, said the medical report was issued on the same day (last Monday) Babalakin met with the EFCC in Abuja.

He said, “It took the EFCC close to a week to get him. He was served with all the processes and released because he took an undertaken that he will appear in court for his arraignment.
“We believe if there is a medical issue that he should have contacted us yesterday (Wednesday) rather than to confront us with this application this morning.

“We are disappointed by the tactics of the first defendant (Babalakin) but Your Lordship can bend backward and allow us to come back next week.”
However, the judge said, since an admission of a patient in an hospital like LUTH was easily verifiable, the EFCC should go to the hospital and report back to the court.

  3. Everyday for the thief, but one day for the owner of the house.

Those of us who watched with amused interest, the sudden wealth of Wale over the years, putting aside the very respected law practice to pursue other money spinning interests (never mind that he set up Wale Babalakin & Co., to give credence to his law background), are not surprised it has come to this.

His lifestyle simply was unsustainable through legitimate means and we are little surprised its now all out in the open.

The lure of money is real. We all just have to be careful of whom we dine with.

You just never know with anyone.

    PROUD NAIJA!

  4. O ma se oh! He wants to spoil his father's good record. It has been said that a dog that is heading for doom never listens to the wistle of the hunters.
I guess GEJ is fed up with his antics. Today he was chased out of Lagos Ibadan Expressway. Tomorrow money laundry arrangement, what is coming tomorrow next?
The banks who had been hit by him will be saying that we know him better
