Senate reduces cost of new drivers licences and number plates to N4000, N8400 respectively

FRSC Corps Marshal, Osita Chidoka
Senate Committee on Federal Character has slashed prices for new drivers’ licences and vehicle number plates issued by the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, from N6,000 and N15,000 to N4,000 and N8,400 respectively.

The committee also directed that the Federal Road Safety Commission should forthwith lift the ban on the issuance of the new number plates and licenses which were hitherto suspended.

The recommendations were contained in the committee’s report following an investigation into the issue of new number plates and the public outcry against it.

The committee also ordered that the cost of motor cycle number plates put at N3,000 should be immediately reverted to the old price of N1,500, implying that the licenses should also remain at N75.

It also ordered the cessation of the e-coding scheme and the collection of N2,000 fee per vehicle by the FCT VIO, and urged it to collaborate with and integrate with the FRSC.

The report recommended that, “The FRSC should call for the replacement of driver’s licenses only at the point of renewal at the expiration to avoid double payment.

The committee also noted that the August 2012 deadline for the change was no longer realistic, citing the exorbitant cost and the time lapse during the National Assembly’s intervention.

It further recommended that the Police should cease its Biometric Central Motor Registry which would also attract N3,500 from vehicle owners, saying that it would amount to duplication and additional burden on Nigerians.

“The Police Force should synergise their idea of biometric data collection and collaborate with FRSC which already has an existing data base. The Police should forthwith suspend the introduction of the BCMR and the N3,500 that goes with it,” the committee said.

Other details of the recommendation showed that articulated vehicles will now pay N11, 200, instead of the N20,000 stipulated by the FRSC; while privileged numbers and fancy or personalised numbers were left as recommended by the FRSC.

  5. At the time that the initial fee for new number plate for cars was N15,000 I was made to pay N37,000 just to register a new car.

This N8,400 may still end up at about N20,000 knowing what a typical uniform officers and even government workers generally knows how to do best.. Extorting money from the public. God will Save Naija. Meanwhile sha, thank you ooo senate.

You have just said it all, that is Nigeria for you, they will create an avenue for themselves to make more EGUNJE, at the end of the day the drivers licence may cost like 7 - 10k.
For the main time KUDOS TO THE SENATE, I am sure that our FRSC people would not be happy with this development.

  8. No, I do not believe in skiptizism, I just renewed my driver's license and I did not resort to using FRSC or VIO staff that lucks by the gate. The reason some of these official get away with what they do is because an average Nigerian wants to everything done through the back door and also wants thing done fast fast no recourse to following due process. Most times when I want to renew my certificate I dedicate a day or two to it and never had to pay any officer, true they get angry at my not wanting help from them and as a result try to be hostile but I ignore their gimicks and go through it, if we all can try and do this we would check corruption and stop unscrupulous official reaping where they do not sow. Do you also know that most of the money you give them does not get into the govt pockets? Let do the right thing and somehow we will check corruption and insensitive services.
