The shortlist for the 13th Caine Prize for African Writing has been announced. Amongst writers on the list is Nigerian writer, Babatunde Rotimi for his story ‘Bombay’s Republic’.
Other writers who made the shortlist are Kenyan, Billy Kahora for ‘Urban Zoning’; Malawian, Stanley Kenani for ‘Love on Trial’; Zimbabwean, Melissa Myambo for ‘La Salle de Depart’; and South African, Constance Myburgh for ‘Hunter Emmanuel’.
The winner of the £10,000 prize will be announced at a celebratory dinner to be held at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, UK on July 2.
Some of the past winners of the prize which is named after former chairman of the Booker Group Plc, Sir Michael Caine, are Kenyan, Binyavanga Wainaina for ‘Discovering Home’ (2002); Nigerian, S. Afolabi for his story ‘Monday Morning’ (2005); Sierra Leonean, Olufemi Terry for ‘Stickfighting Days’; and Zimbabwean, NoViolet Bulawayo for ‘Hitting Budapest’ (2011).
It will be recalled that Nigerian writer, Ben Okri, was only recently announced as the new vice president of the Caine Prize
