Jonathan vows to correct structural defects in education

Apparently disturbed by the decay in the education sector, President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, vowed to correct all structural deficiencies in tertiary institutions in the nation, lamenting that the defects in the system were responsible for the failure of children.

Speaking at the19th and 20th convocation ceremonies of the Federal University of Technology (FUT) , Minna, Niger State, the president said the deficiencies in the sector informed his administration’s silent revolution there.

Jonathan, who spoke through the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, said,“We have high expectations of our tertiary institutions and I personally will no longer tolerate the inefficiencies, which are causing our educational system to fail our children, hence we are presently effecting a silent revolution in the delivery of knowledge to our students and this is because of the realization that the educational sector has, for long, been faced with structural deficiencies.”

He maintained that for the nation to achieve the desired development it craved for, a sound and robust education sector is the path to that change.

This, the President said informed the decision to ensure that each of the 36 states in the nation has a federal university in order to make education accessible to the youths, “from Kaiama or in Kaura Namoda”. According to the President, “we shall leave no stone unturned in bringing quality education to our people.”

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Muhammed Audu, had, earlier, presented 2506 first degree students for graduation, out of which 34 bagged first class honours, 514 had second class upper and 1,221 made second class lower while 668 came out with third class honours.
