Bishop Oyedepo Faces N2bn Law Suit For Slapping Church Member

Popular pastor and founder of the Living Faith Christian Church International, David Oyedepo, will face a legal action for slapping a young lady during church service, last year.

Robert Igbinedion, a Lagos based lawyer, confirmed to us Friday that he had filed a suit, on behalf of the young lady, at the Ogun State High Court for the enforcement of the lady's fundamental rights to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, human dignity, fair hearing, and freedom from discrimination.

Mr. Igbinedion is seeking an award of N2bn as 'general and exemplary damages' against Mr. Oyedepo.
"If a wrong is done to the young lady, she is bound to receive justice for that wrong," said Mr. Igbinedion, a Solicitor at Salus Populi Chambers.

In the suit, Mr. Igbinedion said that the young lady, while answering an "illegal" alter call, was trying to explain herself when the pastor gave her "a dirty and thunderous slap."

"The respondent (Mr. Oyedepo) made the alter call for witches to come out, he did not make a similar call for other categories of sinners like illicit drug dealers, contract inflators, fraudsters, adulterers, and fornicators in the church," read the suit.

Mr. Igbinedion, who represented the victims of the celebrated Pastor Emeka Ezeugo (popularly known as Reverend King) at the Magistrate court, in 2006; stated that cases of violence in the place of worship if not nipped in the bud could escalate into 'uncountable' dimensions.

Furthermore, he said the calling out of the young lady (and others) as witches are illegal, unconstitutional, and a breach of Section 34 of the Constitution of Nigeria, African Charter on Human and People's Right, and United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Right.

The suit asked the court to compel Mr. Oyedepo to issue a self-signed public apology to be published in two national dailies and one international satellite television station.

It also wants the respondent to issue a similar alter call for drug dealers, corrupt government officials, bribe-giving contractors, and other category of sinners who are members of the church.

In December last year, a video of Mr. Oyedepo viciously slapping a teenage girl during church service for saying she is "a witch for Jesus" appeared on popular site You Tube.

Though later removed, the video went viral within days with the pastor, fondly called Papa, receiving a lot of stick from outraged viewers and members of the public.

One viewer described the act as "unbiblical, barbaric, and a disgrace."

Days later, another video surfaced in which Mr. Oyedepo tried to justify his action saying "it is my ministry to slap" and that the fact that the witch, rather than going to court, apologized showed his superiority.
"People now complain on the Internet that I slapped a witch. If I see another one, I'll slap," he said in the video.

  3. From what I saw on the video, it is obvious that Oyedepo is a proud man and will also be cut down except he repents. How is he sure that the spirit of God is still with him?

  4. @I bought the complete video and I watched it. My opinion is different from yours. I guess we should leave other issues that we aren't clear about and concentrate on the issues at hand.
A quick reminder, Samuel Taylor Colerige said and I quote 'until you understand an author's ignorance, presume yourself ignorant of his understanding'.

  5. i am very proud of the courage that papa had to slap a witch and he is still alive. the same witch went back to beg papa after the program. i hope the lawyer will be careful because noman can file a suit against the almighty God.he may not be alive to argue such case in the court.i am of the opinion that this reaction is being triggered by the witches but theri is nothing they can do. i pray that God will not only send men to slap the witches but also rain His fire of destruction upon all the witches and secret troublers of nigeria in jesus name.

  7. Please let us not crucify the Bishop bcos atimes these men do things as they receive signals from above. To the natural man and the uninformed everything is interpreted upside down. But the mystrey of individual ministrations is based on the revelation as per ministration. Good lawyer Mr Robert have not gone to sue the pastors that go to bathe other people's wivies at bar beach neither has he sued any of the mushroom churches where people are subjected to all kinds of inhuman treatment in the name of deliverance bcos he thinks he can make money form this that is why he is making noise going to court. My Robert you shd know that the altar call was not by compulsion but by the volition of the one that answered.

  16. This is a spiritual issue mr lawyer, stop raising d issue has past cos of ur own selfish interest. U are filling case against d holyspirit and no man can fight God and go free. Where were u when someone is innocent in Nigeria and guilty abroad, am sure u will not see dt one. Even bible said Jesus christ made a wip of cord and wipe out all those dt were corrupting d temple in d synagogue, those selling things, d gamblers, money changers e.t.c. That's how d spirit led Him. And by d way nobody forced d lady in question to come out and confess. This is a sensitive case, beware mr lawyer. Glory!

  17. Pple shld be careful of what they say. where in the Bible is it written that pple shld be slapped for not acceptin being called witch? Is it because Oyedepo is a 'man of God'? Did any one notice the statement 'Do you know who I am'. Only God is 'I AM'. Is Oyedepo equating himself with God? No man should ascribe to himself the glory of God. God is just and justice is of Him. The man of God need to repent and seek forgiveness.

  18. The statement 'Do you know who I am' is it a christ-like utterance? where in the bible did Jesus exhibit a proud attitude or statement while performing deliverance, healing, etc? A man of God should be meek and humble and be christ-like. if the bible says 'suffer not a witch to live' does it mean pastors should go about slapping witches and equating themselves with God?

  19. From the vedoe clip, the man of God asked the poor girl 'are u a witch? the poor girl replied 'No i am not a witch, I am a with for Jesus'. What is wrong in this statement that will warrant a man of God to slap the poor girl and place himself in position of God and said 'Do you know who i am and went further to pass judgement by saying 'you are a devil and will end up in hell' Who is of the devil and who is of God here? Is Oyedepo a man of God?

  20. When you get to court they will ask him to use the Bible to swear. that same bible says that witches should be killed. she is lucky after her confession she was not killed. Leave the man of God alone!

  23. The laws of state sometimes oppose the laws of the spirit e.g; Fundamental human rights allows fornication but spiritual law forbids it. So let the pastor enforce the spiritual laws and allow the Lawyer to enforce the state laws. If state law condemn the pastor, spiritual law may still free his soul after all the apostles were forbidden to preach by state laws and died for it. Yet we know they are glorified.

  24. Spiritual things are not interpreted by physical mediocre minds.if you dont know what to say, better remain silent cos the warfare is not a carnal one,if you think what Bishop has done is physical, then, travel to your village and slap any Witch you see and come back.We have trampled the devil under our feet and the battle is the lords. We have the right to make showmanship of our authority over devil and host of his agents. Jesus is Lord over all. Amen
