INEC postpones Kogi by-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the by-election scheduled to hold yesterday at polling unit 003 of Oturu-Opowu ward in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi.

The election will now be held on Wednesday. The State Acting Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr James Dakop, in a chat with reporters in Lokoja said that INEC was forced to postpone the state assembly election because the logos of APGA, CPC and NTP were not on the ballot papers.

He said decision to postpone the election was the right one as it will forestall unnecessary litigation that might arise if the election were held as scheduled.

“It is only proper that we include their logos," he said. "We are appealing to the people to bear with the INEC, to be patient and accept the little mistake,’’ he said.

The Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lokoja nullified results of the state assembly election held in April last year in the unit and ordered a re-run to determine the actual winner between Gabriel Daodu of the PDP and Abiodun Aiyedun of the Labour Party.

Nine parties, including the ACN and ANPP were among other parties that had indicated their willingness to participate in the election.
